What do you think golden retrievers are the best dogs or not?

Well Ginbark like they say different strokes for different folks.
Golden's I have have never been boring and just lumps of a dogs. My Golden's are active and high spirited! They are very smart and have been a part of my life for a very long time! I have been able to not only work with them but have also enjoyed all their traits which I have been able to bring out in my Golden's. I have never found them boring or have they even come close to that.
They are very smart and easy to train, and they retain what they learn.
They do have grooming needs like any other dog but their loyalty makes up for that 10 fold.
The have been a family favorite for a very long time and they are still.
if u r looking for a dog whi homely or who is too cute
and wont shout quite frequently then golden retriever and labradog are the best options
but remember to check their breeds
To me they are probably the best breed out there, but their are many others that are just as good. Retrievers are good because they are calm, playful, they enjoy being in the water, they are not too aggressive, and they love being around humans. They play nicely with little kids also.
great family dogs, grew up with a golden i remember him being really lazy though. Spent most of his time in the pool or sleeping, sweet dog though.
There is no best breed just the best dog or breed for that person/family at that time. Personally I would never own a Golden, they are BORING. I need a more challenging less wimpy dog.
personally i think bichon frise's are the best dogs around. they're really friendly, intelligent, cute, affectionate and playful. only thing is they are really pricy... worth it though.
Not. Goldens may be the best dog for some people, but they just don't do anything for me. I'm not sure why. I would say it's because I don't like big goofy hairy dogs who shed a lot and stay puppyish for years. But, then again I like German shepherds and that can be said of many (especially male) GSD's as well. Maybe it's that I'm not interested in a breed that will fawn over anyone and everyone they meet. I like my dogs to be ok with and even a little friendly with strangers if the situation warrants it, but I don't think I want a dog that would happily go home with any person they meet on the street. They're often great dogs, I just have absolutely no desire to live with one.

What do you think about this obedience trainer in my area?
He offers 3 different types of training. The one I am interested in is where he keeps my dog for half of the week. He showed me his german shepherd and all of the things my dog will learn.. I want that in my dog. Should I do it? The trainer will help me in making my dog obey me as well. The only problem is.. do you think that it will be less effective since I'm not there?
I can't go through with weekly classes. It'd be embarassing and annoying. I have a 2 y/o mini dachshund that does not like stranger's (to the extent of biting). All of my other dogs are great! I don't want him to bite a 2nd victim and get a law suit or have him taken away.

Your dog has bitten and his problem is not a training issue. Any qualified professional will diagnose this as an advanced behavior problem that requires you to be involved in all aspects of the behavior modification that is usually a very long process, although you have not given enough information for anyone to really know the extent of what's going on and how serious it may be. A diagnosis needs to be made face to face with a qualified trainer and will probably require an intake that may last up to two hours. There is no reason to be embarrassed, but this dog cannot be in a "normal" training class among other people and dogs, based on the small amount of information you have given. Please seek the advice of a qualified trainer who has extensive experience in behavioral issues (aggression and biting). There are many people in the same situation as you. It is emotionally difficult for both you and your dog, I'm sure. Dogs bite when they feel they have no other options left. It is not a moral issue. Your dog is not a "bad" dog. ALL dogs have the capacity to bite and will bite, no matter how nice they are or how well trained they are when all other options have either been exhausted or cut off from them, or they have a physical ailment. "Aggression" is an emotional issue that stems from a combination of fear and/or stress, and anxiety, or it may sometimes be biologically driven. The particulars of it range for each dog and their situation (ie. resource guarding, on-leash-aggression, self-body-guarding, location-guarding, stranger aggression, dog-dog aggression, barrier-frustration). I am a firm believer in training your own dog.
one... even though someone tells you about their methods, does not guarentee they use them when you are not around.
two... training is a special bonding time. Why give that away?
three... how are you going to learn how to handle the dog should he back slide and start messing up again.
Please, train your own dog. If you think that it is going to be embarrassing and annoying to go to weekly classes and work with your dog every day, how annoying and embarrassing is it going to be when you are stuck somewhere not knowing for sure how to handle a situation so your dog has to go back to live with the trainer for a week or so? I would be more annoyed and embarrassed that i could not handle my own dog when he relapses. (and they all do it to some degree)
Everyone i know that has tried the method of letting a trainer train the dog had to still be trained themselves and then they had to send the dog back for brushups.
Take the time and deal with your dog with a great trainer by your side.
I would especially since you have to do none of the work and show up at a class. That is cool.
It's important that the trainer shows you how to handle your dog. I believe you might be having difficulties communicating with your dog because your technique is poor. Training classed and a good trainer will fix both you and your dog.
I have known numberous people who have had this type of training done on their dogs and it is essentially useless. If you don't know how to train your dog it doesn't matter what someone else does to your dog, it will never listen to you. I have trained dogs for a half century plus - have held public and private classes and 99% of the training is the person, not the dog. The dog picks up fast when it is properly cued and worked with but the person takes a lot of training. It isn't 'embarrassing' to learn - were you embarrassed to learn to read and write in school? This is no different - you have to learn. It isn't that the dog doesn't understand your english - the dog can tell what you want because you are not consistently and properly training it. English/Spanish/German/whateve... isn't dog language so they have to learn - their primary language is body language and regardless of what words you use if your body tells them something else, that is what they will hear. YOU need to get to classes. YOU are allowing your dogs to be a nuisance to the public and you should be sued for being a dangerous dog owner and neglecting their care. Go to weekly classes with a good trainer and learn to train your dog - that is a daily thing - not just weekly - You go weekly but you train daily.
His German Shephard does those things because he trained it - if you want your dog to do those things then go to the classes and learn how to train your dog. I think that as usual the hardest part will be training you as you have preconceived ideas that don't relate well to dog training and you are putting your ego into the situation instead of wanting to do what is best for the dog.

In halve a week I do not think that any body can train a 2 year old to the level you was promised. You did not mention what method was explained to you that this trainer will use to train the dog.
I trained my Border Collie from nothing and as I was not experienced I know what I went through to get him to the stage he is now. He is CDX titled and working for his UD title. I now use the reward system because the old pull and jerk system that I was taught at the obedience school I first attended with him did not work. I think that this trainer will use a heavy handed method to try and break your dog, I do not see why you cannot be there to learn what the trainer is doing to the dog and besides any trainer should train the handler to train the dog so that the handler and the dog will acquire respect for each other. There is no embarrassment in training your dog only enjoyment.

i think that people really need to stop putting pitbulls down its just not fear. pitbulls are only mean if they were abused or if some one raised them that way. i have seen way to meany sweet pitbulls at the pound and i feel so bad for them i want to take them all home. and i know why people are scared of them but. dont hate them from what you hear about them. they can be such sweet hearts. give them a chance. they are good dogs.

I KNOW THIS IS LONG BUT PLEASE READ!! JUST HEAR ME OUT!!Now dont get me wrong with what im about to tell you, because im a total dog lover!! But a violent and deadly dog should not be loose! Now it is a proven fact that pit bulls, boxers, german shepard. and a couple of other big breed of dogs do have a high tendancy to turn on people because many people train them to be guard or watch dogs! Now many of the cases you probably have heard about have been the ones where a pit bull has been trained to be a guard dog has gotten out and attacked people! Now i also know from experience that is one of the worst things that could happen to a person! A very clost personal friends little 3 yr old was walking up to a friends with his dad and was brutally attacked by a german sheperd! The dog had never attacked anyone before yet it turned on this little boy and bit down on his head, The little boy was rushed to the hospital and is now doing ok, but they put the dog down. In this case i beleive this dog should have been put down because it almost took this little boys life. Sorry i went on so much but i wanted to kind of express both sides of the situation that you expressed! 鈾?
Any kind of dog can be sweet it is all in the way u train and raise them not all pit bulls are aggressive like I said it is how u train them if your abusive to them yes then they will be mean, But pit bulls can be a lovable companion..
pitbulls are great dogs
any dog can be a sweet dog but since people have decided to train pitbulls to fight, they often appear on the media as viscious, flesh eating dogs when in fact they are very sweet.

I think they are so wonderful and loyal. I wish I could have one but unfortunately my living situation wont allow it. I had the pleasure of seeing 6 of them being born last year. They were so so cute and they've all grown up to be beautiful loving dogs. If you get the opportunity to own one, then you should. You wont be sorry. Its about time pit bulls get positve feedback!
i have seen far more injuries from toy poodles and shih tzus than pit bulls and other larger breeds. bigger dogs just have bigger mouths that can cause more damage. it does not mean that breed is more agressive than another. It does not matter what the breed. unless it is taught right from wrong it wont know right from wrong. I trust the "bully breed" dogs that come in to my work much more than the toy breeds to not try and tear a chunk out of my face.
Right on I agree with you 100% and then some. They are sweet dogs treat them right make them part of your family and they are the most loyal dogs I know. I understand peoples fears but they are scared of what they don't know.
They Listen to all media exploiting this breed of dogs. But we as Pit Bull owners (I have APBT from the shelter) have to do our part in keeping our dogs out of trouble. Needs to be strict laws on people that mistreat or train these dogs wrong.
Mine is great shes fun loving goofy loyal and obedient because we took the time and trained her that way.

It depnds on the owner, and the dogs temperement. But pitbulls have it already in them. Unfortunately.
People are afraid of pitbulls because they have a tendency to snap. This is not a fault of the specific breed but because at the moment they are a popular dog. Any time a particular breed becomes popular they breed the dogs as fast as they can to make money. The problem is that they tend to severely inbreed thier dogs, resulting in mental problems. An inbred dog can act normally for years, but because of some mental birth defect one day snap for no obvious reason.
This is true of any popular breed, especially "junk-yard" dogs: dobermans, rottwielers, pitbulls, bulldogs, german shepards, etc.
As long as you pay attention to the blood line and are sure that any inbreeding is slight, the dog should be perfectly sane.
(I'm not completely sure I explained that well, but I tried.)
First of all, to the person who said they have seen more injuries from toy poodles and shih tzus... that is so stupid, do you watch the news or read the paper at all? There have been many deaths and horrible injuries from these dogs and your ignorance is like an insult to the people who have been affected by these attacks. I have to agree with Cjack. Some breeds just have that trait. It does have a TON to do with how they are trained/raised but it can also just be part of the dogs character. And of course they LOOK sweet any dog can look sweet. I have seen lots of sweet looking dogs and you reach down to pet them and they snap at you. I absolutely love dogs and I don't think that the whole breed of pit-bulls should be taken out or anything. There needs to be more efforts to stop the illgal dog fighting to take the whole breed in a different direction over time by breeding more even tempered dogs than ones bred to fight. They are gorgeous dogs and deserve a chance.
my favorite dogs are rottweilers %26 pitbulls !! but i prefer a rottweiler,over the pitbull because of their size. i think pitbulls are nice dogs. it's the owners who mistreat them,and turn them to become aggressive !! i hate people who use them poor dogs,for dogfighting !! they need to get locked up for a long time. any dog will bite when mistreated !! it's sad how they only mention,negative things about pittbulls %26 rottweilers !! when even german shepards attack,and killed people in the past !! it's sad how now they try and ban,both the rottweilers %26 pitbulls !!
I think they are awesome Dogs. They are a great Representative for or Great Marines. I like the one in the comic Beetle Bailey. All dogs are great. It's how they are bred and raised that screws them up. That's how Pit Bulls got on the bad boy list. Their upbringing. Same goes for any dog. I have a Lab/mix with Border Collie. I could have made her a vicious dog if I wanted to. But she is a compassionate dog. She is my Service dog. And one day she was attacked from behind. Out from nowhere this big (I want to say Great Dane but I'm not sure) came and got her. I was trained to do this in that situation, let go of her leash, which I did and she defended us the best she could. I saw something I didn't think she was capable of. She was as vicious as that dog. I hope never to see her like that again. I haven't. That was about five years ago.

Any kind of dog can be sweet it is all in the way u train and raise them not all pit bulls are aggressive like I said it is how u train them if your abusive to them yes then they will be mean, But pit bulls can be a lovable companion..

I think they are so wonderful and loyal. I wish I could have one but unfortunately my living situation wont allow it. I had the pleasure of seeing 6 of them being born last year. They were so so cute and they've all grown up to be beautiful loving dogs. If you get the opportunity to own one, then you should. You wont be sorry. Its about time pit bulls get positve feedback!
i have seen far more injuries from toy poodles and shih tzus than pit bulls and other larger breeds. bigger dogs just have bigger mouths that can cause more damage. it does not mean that breed is more agressive than another. It does not matter what the breed. unless it is taught right from wrong it wont know right from wrong. I trust the "bully breed" dogs that come in to my work much more than the toy breeds to not try and tear a chunk out of my face.
Right on I agree with you 100% and then some. They are sweet dogs treat them right make them part of your family and they are the most loyal dogs I know. I understand peoples fears but they are scared of what they don't know.
They Listen to all media exploiting this breed of dogs. But we as Pit Bull owners (I have APBT from the shelter) have to do our part in keeping our dogs out of trouble. Needs to be strict laws on people that mistreat or train these dogs wrong.

It depnds on the owner, and the dogs temperement. But pitbulls have it already in them. Unfortunately.
People are afraid of pitbulls because they have a tendency to snap. This is not a fault of the specific breed but because at the moment they are a popular dog. Any time a particular breed becomes popular they breed the dogs as fast as they can to make money. The problem is that they tend to severely inbreed thier dogs, resulting in mental problems. An inbred dog can act normally for years, but because of some mental birth defect one day snap for no obvious reason.
This is true of any popular breed, especially "junk-yard" dogs: dobermans, rottwielers, pitbulls, bulldogs, german shepards, etc.
As long as you pay attention to the blood line and are sure that any inbreeding is slight, the dog should be perfectly sane.
(I'm not completely sure I explained that well, but I tried.)
First of all, to the person who said they have seen more injuries from toy poodles and shih tzus... that is so stupid, do you watch the news or read the paper at all? There have been many deaths and horrible injuries from these dogs and your ignorance is like an insult to the people who have been affected by these attacks. I have to agree with Cjack. Some breeds just have that trait. It does have a TON to do with how they are trained/raised but it can also just be part of the dogs character. And of course they LOOK sweet any dog can look sweet. I have seen lots of sweet looking dogs and you reach down to pet them and they snap at you. I absolutely love dogs and I don't think that the whole breed of pit-bulls should be taken out or anything. There needs to be more efforts to stop the illgal dog fighting to take the whole breed in a different direction over time by breeding more even tempered dogs than ones bred to fight. They are gorgeous dogs and deserve a chance.

I think they are awesome Dogs. They are a great Representative for or Great Marines. I like the one in the comic Beetle Bailey. All dogs are great. It's how they are bred and raised that screws them up. That's how Pit Bulls got on the bad boy list. Their upbringing. Same goes for any dog. I have a Lab/mix with Border Collie. I could have made her a vicious dog if I wanted to. But she is a compassionate dog. She is my Service dog. And one day she was attacked from behind. Out from nowhere this big (I want to say Great Dane but I'm not sure) came and got her. I was trained to do this in that situation, let go of her leash, which I did and she defended us the best she could. I saw something I didn't think she was capable of. She was as vicious as that dog. I hope never to see her like that again. I haven't. That was about five years ago.

It does nothing to prevent stray dogs form coming over, beating up your dog and leaving feces and fleas. At my dog obed class there was a man with a Rott and he sold Invisible Fences, he bragged about how wonderful they were so I told him I didn't belive in them. Lots of dogs will blow thru the fence after another dog or squirrel and if they are not HBC when they try to go back into their yard they get shocked. This teaches them home=shock so they can not get home and are on the road. He poo pooed my objections and said he Rott never went thru it. Two years later he was back at class with a different Rott, he saw me and told me I had been right and he no longer sold the fences. His Rott went thru the fence after a cat and was killed by the car going by. The one and only time in 2 yrs he went thru he was killed. He installed a chain link fence b4 he go this new dog.
If you are really into it then buy it! But from experience they don't fully work. The dog will not know it at first but he is able to escape. In time he will learn that he can run throught the fence and get free. And my dog did and he was hit by a car, but managed to walk all the way back to my house and die on my deck. :(

I know lots of people say "to each his own" but I think the way the dogs are killed is very cruel. I don't believe in the "to each his own" theory because I believe in pure good and pure evil. I don't believe in gray areas. I think the way the dogs are killed is pure evil and there is nothing good about it at all. I don't care if it is another culture. It is still cruelty to animals.

In the past, different cultures have tolerated human sacrifice, cannibalism, slavery; don't these also qualify for respect?

I grew up with a dad that hunted elk for food. We were taught by him to repsect these animals and that they should be killed as humanely as possible and that no meat should be wasted as that was disrespectful to the life that was given for us to eat.
I am not against using animals as food, but they deserve a good life before they become food, and they deserve the basic respect of inflicting as little pain as possible when killing them for food.
I also expect the same treatment of our food animals like beef cows, pigs, chickens, etc., and do my part to only buy free range chicken and such.
Hopefully these countries will start to feel the same way, but we are not much better here. Animals suffer needlessly in this country all the time. Tortured animals are brought into shelters regularly, and many die without ever receiving help.
I pray that the cruelty all over the world will soon end, but there is still much to be done.

Factory farming, squeeze cages, overcrowding, insufficient trailers, 'stun bolts', electrocutions, and kosher slaughters are inhumane and cruel. I agree that the way foreign countries slaughter animals is at least as cruel as the way we do it. As for dogs or horses, I cannot in the least understand how they differentiate between the ones they keep as pets and the ones they put on the table. I certainly couldn't do it.

I have a friend who has adopted two racing greyhounds...being around her has given me a very negative feeling towards racing and how the dogs are treated. This is very upsetting...to hear that they had been given cocaine and not properly cared for after a race. My thoughts? Outrage and anger that dogs...any dogs.are treated this way. I just don't agree with it at all.

In my opinion, PETA is a horrible group! I absolutely despise them.
PETA is an extremist group. They say they have the best interest of the animals in mind, but I don't believe it. Although I have no proof of it, I would suspect that many of their "under-cover videos" are even staged, which is sad.

I don't have all the information handy, but at one point a year or so ago, I decided to read through the PETA site. What I found was a wealth of mis-information and information skewed to support their "cause".
In short, they are a destructive group that go about things completely the wrong way. They "protest" by interfering with others in ways that should not be done.

After I saw the pictures of what they did to the animals I decided to not like them.
I'm all against animal cruelty, however I see benefit from animal testing. Not the painful cruel 'testing' but the actual experiments that test drugs that could cure millions.

PETA is an extremist group. They say they have the best interest of the animals in mind, but I don't believe it. Although I have no proof of it, I would suspect that many of their "under-cover videos" are even staged, which is sad.

I don't have all the information handy, but at one point a year or so ago, I decided to read through the PETA site. What I found was a wealth of mis-information and information skewed to support their "cause".
In short, they are a destructive group that go about things completely the wrong way. They "protest" by interfering with others in ways that should not be done.

Eh..I like what they do, and I understand to a certain degree I mean I don't like testing human products on animals (such as makeup and shampoo) but I think that if animal testing will help save the lives of millions of people, why not? They're so hypocritical that it annoys me. I mean 'save the animals don't use them for testing' yet one of the uppity ups uses insulin (which was discovered due to animal testing) I mean if she's such a big PETA person, she should just stop using insulin and die...

After I saw the pictures of what they did to the animals I decided to not like them.

I love mutts. I own 2 of them. Both lab/blue heeler mixes. One more heeler, one more lab. Great dogs and I love them dearly. They were both rescued. I would not have paid an unscrupulous breeder for these dogs. Not that my dogs aren't worth it but because the breeders are crook and I will not reward them for their unscrupulous breeding practices. I also own purebred chihuahuas. If I was going to spend hundreds or thousands on a dog it would be on chihuahuas not on mutts. And for those who think mutts are healthier, that is just a lot of bull. Chihuahuas often live to be 20+ years old. My chihuahuas seldom need to see a vet. Usually it is for shots, or a spay/neuter. My mutts are also healthy, but a lot of the dogs' health has to do with the care they receive.

However, if you are referring to the dog that get adopted at the pound, then that's awesome. I understand people choose certain breeds over another due to lifestyle, which is fine, because it is part of a responsible decision. You should never buy a certain dog just because it the "cool" thing to do and some douche bad celeb was seen toting one around.
It should be pure breeds or rescues. That's the way to go.

I do however have a problem with the people that feel that they should be breeding mutts.. It adds nothing to the dog population. It degrades both breeds, and it creates more unwanted, out of control dogs that end up dying cause no one wants them.. A litter of 8 is born, you take one, and no one else wants the rest.. I like the purebred, all the time, thought and work that has been put into producing a proper breed.. I like that there is consistency and you know what you are getting when you buy a dog..

It will look like a half German shepherd half lab. You cannot tell it might be big like a German shepherd and look like a lab or it might be small and look like a German shepherd or it could look like both in one.

it will lean more towords the black lab...his ears will not know if they should lay or stand...and should have a great personality...suggest to the owners of the female to encourage all the new puppy owners to get their dog fixed...there are an abundance of shepherd lab mixes in shelters.
My Aunt Nancy has one. They are beautiful! Beautiful, and HUGE! He stands 4 feet tall on all fours. His name is Duke. He looks more black lab than german shepherd, but he is sooooo beautiful!

I think it would look cute as a button. I have a full blooded GSD and I love him with all my heart. I've had many Labs also. I think you will be pleased. They are both highly intelligent canines so how can you go wrong?

their teeth once at night and feed them Purina One.
Yes, they need to be brushed and it takes awhile
to potty train them. I keep my dogs hair clipped

What do you have to provide to get a dog from a shelter?
I have a really active choco lab and he gets lonely sometimes when I have to leave for work and he has to stay fenced in the back yard. We live in a rural area and I was thinking about getting a shelter dog as a playmate for him.
How does that work?

It depends on where you go. But when I recently rescued my cat, I had to provide them with the names of my vet, what types of pets I had already, whether they were male or female, how old they were, and whether I rented or owned my home. They also wanted proof of my address (I think so that if problems arose they could find me easily or something), so I had to bring in a bill with my name and address on it.

We have since moved to a bigger house, with a bigger yard. She goes outside in her pen, and for walks with me. (We both need to lose some weight) We keep her shots up dated, she's always wearing her license and she gets fed once a day. We also take her to the groomer when she starts to smell bad. lol
It all depends on what shelter you get your pet from. Some will ask you a million and one questions. Others just want the animal gone and your money. So, be careful of where you get him/her from. Make sure their values about life and animals match yours.

You need to get the puppy wormed and vaccinated as well.Such a young puppy is vulnerable to all kinds of viruses. Good luck.

If it has started eating. mix PRM with puppy canned dog food, make it like oatmeal, I doubt it teeth are very long, and eating dry food at this time will not work, His teeth will break. Feed every 4 hours. No human milk, you will have a great case of diaherra.
you should get some puppy formula from your vet, or a petshop. Both would also sell bottles and nipples for puppies. You should take it to see a vet anyways. Goat's milk is also acceptable to feed a puppy.. but not cow's milk.
It is old enough to start introducing solids too. Soak a little kibble in warm water and mash it up. You can also offer meat baby foods.. just read the ingredeints to be sure it does not have any onion powder in it.
A puppy that young should be offered small amounts of food every 2-3 hours.

If the puppy has its baby teeth, it can probably eat some softened puppy food, too, but using the milk replacer with a bottle will help it to feel secure. There are also recipes online for formulas, but I am not certain whether they provide everything the pup needs, or whether they could cause diarhea. You could also check with the vet for more information. Have fun with your puppy. By the way, can't the people who had the dog with the puppies take the puppy back for two or three weeks, until the puppy is old enough to be more realistically weaned from the mother? Also, with kittens, the mother helps them to defacate, and I am not sure how long a mother dog does this. If the puppy does not seem to be urinating or defacating, then you will have to help it along with a dampened wash cloth or paper towel, by gently wiping the areas, so that waste products don't build up in its body.

Puppies are not supposed to be taken from the mother until they are at least 8 weeks old, I bought a small dog for my children and he was only 6 weeks old when we went to see him but the breeder warned us that they would not let us have him until he was 12 weeks so that he would have all his injections and be used to being away from the mother for a while. This also was the case with a Dalmatian pup I bought eight years ago. I think that the breeder is at fault here and all a 4 week old puppy should be taking is the mothers milk, it looks like your going to have to bottle feed the pup for the next two weeks at the most and then start introducing puppy food and watered milk eventually stopping the milk and giving him/her water instead of milk as milk is not good for any dogs as it can cause fits if given to them all the time. If you took the pup back to the mother now she most likely would reject it.

You can give goats milk to him as theis is the closes milk you will find. He should of been started on puppy food, like pedigree (tin) puppy food, mixed with about 10ml of cooled boiled water. He will need feeding at least 4 times a day, from the age of 2 weeks he needs worming every two weeks, i always use panacur puppy paste from your local vets. Jabs should be given from 8 weeks old. I would strongly recommend you go back to the breeder as it is still possabl;e to loss him

my dog runs around panting heavy and crawls up under end tables too small for her to get under. I have had some people tell me to drug her during storms. That is not a option,
because I live in Fla and I refuse to drug a dog everytime it storms.

Comfort,Comfort,Comfort!No one knows until they have had an animal that has that problem what it is like!Years ago I had an Australian Shepard that was so pitiful .He started out jumping up into the air as if to try to bite the Lightening?Every time it lightened he went up doing his Biting thing?Then before long he became frantic hours before the storm even appeared,pacing ,scratching ,crying,howling all in combination.When I let him in he would go straight to my bedroom and go under the bed and dig.If he couldn't get under the bed he would dig into the carpet.One time we took him down to the Pool House and locked him in there,before we realized how serious this was for him ,and he chewed a metal vent on the Door completely out of the door and just showed up at the back door frantic!From that day on I held this poor 40 # freaked out Baby in my arms every time a storm even got near.It was terrible ,he was scared to death his whole life of storms near and far!I know now that I could have given him a small dose of Benadryl and both of us would have felt much better.RIP "Cody"!!Good Luck!!

crate train your dogs
this is not cruel your dogs actually feel safe and secure in their crate . everytime there is a storm get them relaxed and comfortable in their crate. my dog is crate trained and he goes in his crate by himself when he wants some alone time.
my dalmation gets scared too, the best thing to do if you are home is just to be in the same room with the dog, and pet the dog and comfort her, let her know that you are there and it will help calm her down. when we get storms if I am home, i just put her bed in our room, and she calms down just being near us. good luck, i know its hard to have that everytime it rains!

Dude most dogs act like that its normal some times. My little brother told me that his teachers dog went so mad that they had to put the dog down but my two dogs don't have a problem with the storms.
give her a treat, and i mean a really good treat so that she associates storms with good food. if that doesn't work, have you crate trained her? try training her to a crate, to most dogs, a crate is their little hideaway place, their own personal space, since she's trying to hide under tables, she would appreciate a crate more suited to her size. but, sometimes drugs are the only way to go, don't rule it out because storms can be unhealthily stressful for some dogs. hope this helps, lol.

Make sure that you keep him inside, curtains closed and stay with him and keep him calm.
crate train your dogs
this is not cruel your dogs actually feel safe and secure in their crate . everytime there is a storm get them relaxed and comfortable in their crate. my dog is crate trained and he goes in his crate by himself when he wants some alone time.
my dalmation gets scared too, the best thing to do if you are home is just to be in the same room with the dog, and pet the dog and comfort her, let her know that you are there and it will help calm her down. when we get storms if I am home, i just put her bed in our room, and she calms down just being near us. good luck, i know its hard to have that everytime it rains!
I have a dog that does this also, I put him in a room that is dark where he can't see the lightning.

Dude most dogs act like that its normal some times. My little brother told me that his teachers dog went so mad that they had to put the dog down but my two dogs don't have a problem with the storms.
give her a treat, and i mean a really good treat so that she associates storms with good food. if that doesn't work, have you crate trained her? try training her to a crate, to most dogs, a crate is their little hideaway place, their own personal space, since she's trying to hide under tables, she would appreciate a crate more suited to her size. but, sometimes drugs are the only way to go, don't rule it out because storms can be unhealthily stressful for some dogs. hope this helps, lol.

I'm exasperated... I've tried everything i could think of to make them stop howling at night, from scolding them, treating them, or letting them sleep in the room with me, but nothing works. any suggestions?

if your an animal lover like i am no matter what kind it is, try seeking help for her by way of training from an experienced person who dedicates their lives to help dogs in her situation. if training isn't something that you can afford then keep looking for a home for her cause there is someone or somwhere that she can go to and that will want her. if you have a wal-mart near you contact them about an adopt a pet program that they host (i can't remember the name of it) and ask when and where it is. that would be the best solution for you.good luck!!

You cannot rehome an aggressive dog without legal implications if the dog were to attack a person or other pet. This would cause you years of misery and possible financial ruin depending on the situation.
You can't risk giving it away to someone who says they can retrain an aggressive pit because this person might very well turn out to be a dog-fighter. Imagine your guilt if your pet ended up in this miserable situation!
And you can try to wait for a no-kill SANCTUARY- not a shelter- they do exist but are extremely rare and the wait is very long, but what will you do with your poor dog until then? Cage it? Kennel it? Tie it up? All sad states of existance for an active, healthy dog.
Make the comittment to the training. Give it your best shot. If the trainer thinks it's not working, be your dog's best friend and put it out of a future of misery. Do this with your own vet- ask him to come to your home so the dog isn't stressed out. I hate to give you this answer. But not all dogs can be saved. Good luck to you. I advertised him free to a good home letting the new owner know how he was, and the guy after 5 min. could come up to the dog and befriend him, took him home, he lived out in the country and they lived happily ever after. but that isn't always the case.

my neighbors want my dog gone too. just because he barks at them when they look like they r approaching his territory. all he is trying to do is protect his family and home. i just ignore these people. the only way they can make u get rid of ur dog is if the police r involved but unless u live in an area with breed specific legislations then u r fine. unless they report ur dog as vicious because it killed another dog but other than that i would just ignore them some people need to pull their heads out of their @sses

As a Pit Bull owner it was your responsibility to take care of both dogs, now one is dead and in the worst possible way dog fighting (like pit bulls don't already have bad reputation)
It's probably Little late for a muzzle and strict rules now so the only responsible thing for you to do is to put the dog down. I really hate saying this because I'm a pit bull owner! But they need responsible owners to train and take care of them not crazy lazy idiots that don't care.

I am very sorry for what has happened but pitbulls are noted for that kind of behavior. She was probably a puppymill dog and was bred to fight. That is genetic. I'm not 100% put pretty sure, if wrong someone will correct it. The first thing to do is muzzle her at all times when outside. keep her in and on your own property. but this sounds as though at heartbreaking as it may be she may have to be put to sleep...I am very sorry. but first a dog then a young child. As your friend either take more preventative actions or have her put down. I had to have a bordercollie/chow mix put down a few years back cause he would bite us. It was a heartbreaking decision. but it was the right thing cause he could have turned on my 7yr old little girl at the time

What do you do or say when somebodies dogs jump on you every time you go to their home?
When I go to my neighbors both of their large Golden Retrievers jump on us. One stops after a few times but the other continues. They only tell it to stop once.

Don't say anything, just gently push the dog off of you and then praise it when it is down.
Some people are totally clueless and will get offended if you say something about it, but if they see you having to "train" their dog, they will either get the hint or the dog will actually learn from you.
The best way to discourage them is to step backwards when they are trying to jump on you. The dog will land on the ground instead of you, and it will discourage him from doing it. Then when he finally gives up and sits or stands in front of you, pet him and tell him he's a good dog, etc. You can also use your knee to push him off you. Dogs don't like that.
I would ask them to put it away when I am coming over so it doesn't knock my kids down or would not go there any more...

What do you do if you sight a coyote?
I am pretty sure I saw a coyote in my neighbors yard while walking my 5 month yr. old puppy. Recently, attacks in other towns, just minutes away have been reported, and a few yrs. ago There were coyotes on my street. I want to know how i can protec myself and my puppy if one is in our yard!

And they are attacking because society has built into thier homes and have destroyed what they need to survive. They are doing what they need to do to survive. I would just be extra careful when you are out with your puppy and be aware of your surroundings. I believe you can find sprays that can be used to deter an attacking dog, look in your local pet shops. Although I'm not sure if it would work on a coyote. You could also maybe carry one of those loud canned fog horns. It may just be loud enough to scare it away.

Keep in mind..YOU are in THEIR habitat and territory, not the other way around. We have built into their natural habitat and they have no where left to go as humans are now inhabiting their living space. I encounter coyotes on a daily basis (I work as a wildlife biologist) and they run from me. I have never had one approach me. I don't really have any protection .. sometimes I carry a stick but that is more for protection against people or if I run across a mountain lion.has never been an issue with coyotes. I am however a lot more weary of stray dogs on my study site as they are a lot more likely to attack me than a coyote is. You too can carry a stick when you walk your dog if this makes you feel protected. This can be good protection against loose dogs as well that may attack your puppy. Just be cautious when walking your dog..and do not let it out unsupervised and you should be okay. If your dog is a small breed it can never go out unsupervised, even when an adult.
