They're high priced mutts and by buying one, you've supported a puppymill or backyard breeder who's only out to make a buck off their "Special" dogs.

What does my dogs submissive behavior towards me mean?
I have an American Eskimo dog who I have had for nine years. Most of the time he is playful and happy but it seems whenever I approach him his ears flatten and his tail goes between his legs. He's never barked growled or bit me and I have never hit, been rough or even really raised me voice at him. He will cuddle with me and play with me but he always seems a little submissive and nervous. I know I'm supposed to be the "alpha" in the "pack" or whatever, but it makes me sad to think he doesn't trust me or he is afraid or doesn't like me or something. Can some one who understands dog behavior help me understand?

Older dogs need more frequent check-ups, complete with geriatric blood work. Things can change so very quickly as they age. Please take him in for a check-up.
It's normal submissive behavior. He is not showing fear by lowering his head and tail, he is showing respect. He is just a naturally submissive dog and readily accepts you as his leader, which actually shows he trusts you. Remember, lowering the head and cowering in fear, are two totally different things.
He might just be a nervous dog who sees you as his leader. If he didn't trust you, I think he would be displaying more dominant behaviour in order to take control and to control YOU.
Was he abused before you got him?
I second walkinglady's idea that he might be trying to tell you that something is wrong. Is this new behaviour, or has he always been like this?
It may be how you are approaching him...talk softly to him when you approach and hold out your hand and then when he comes to you he can smell your hand. Dogs are generally submissive to their owners, they recognize you as 'the boss' or 'the big dog'...I would just sit with him ..dont look him directly in the eyes because if you stare at him it will also make him submissive..when you stare into his eyes you are telling him to do so. Just get down on the floor, talk softly to him, and a lot of petting never hurts. Good luck. =o))

If his submissive/nervous behavior is not including growling ect I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe instead of approaching him stay a ways back and get him to come to you, use a treat and kind words that may help him be less nervous, he could just feel a little threatened when you come into his space.

I would think the longer you have a dog, the more respectful, submissive they would be at times just to reiterate that they understand their place in the scheme of things.
I wouldn't be horribly concerned about the behavior - but I understand how it can feel. When my dog behaves this way it almost makes me think she's afraid of me, or like she thinks she's in trouble for something when nothing is wrong.
When she's like that, I just make sure to be overly playful and friendly with her so she realizes she's welcome and accepted.. and that's usually enough to get to go back to her normal behavior.

Basically what your dog is trying to tell you is that he is not confident and it may have nothing to do with you, it may just be him and it also is something that should have been looked into many years ago as now it will take a lot longer to build his confidence.
Building his confidence requires a lot more than I can offer on this forum. If you want to change this behavior to get a more confident dog, I would suggest that you consult with a behaviorist and see if they are willing to work with you and your dog. This is something that can be fixed, but it will take time and you will probably need the outside help of a behaviourist.

She respects him and sees him as the alpha dog - he's the head of the household, so it's only natural. Perhaps your dog is merely showing you respect. There's also a small possibility that perhaps your pup was abused previous to you getting him - but that's just a wild guess. My dog had been abused, and it took her a while to fully trust us, and as I said she still acts submissive and respectful to my father. Maybe your dog's bad memories are sticking with it?
first,i would recommend a good training program.i had a beautiful Husky that would do the same thing,except he did go after me.(he was very Alpha,and i didnt know better)I had to put him down and wish be would have been better trained in the first place,its just that kind of breed.Husky@Am.eskimos@such are a lot alike in behavior.please get help,now,before it becomes a serious issue.he could be ill,or someone has intimidated him without your knowledge,or you could be unknowingly playing into the matter and making it worse without realizing what you're doing wrong.good luck.Rowan
This is just his temperment/personality. He's a submissive and shy dog. You are not going to change his temperment, however, you can influence his behavior even at 9 years. Get some dried liver treats (these are really good for him), dogs love them. We use them in the show ring for "baiting" dogs in conformation and for training rewards. Keep them close to where you "hang out". When he approaches you, or you approach him, talk softly to him like "good boy", "good dog", encouraging him to come close, praising him, letting him know that coming close is a good thing. Reward him with the treats. After a short period, he will associate getting close to you with praise and treats. This will help his shyness and help him to gain more confidence in himself. He will learn that coming close and approaching can bring BIG rewards. Dogs love praise. I use praise almost solely in training as treats are not always available. Dogs respond positively to the praise we give them.
Be persistent and consistent. It takes some time. Good luck.

i'd love to know! Mine's a 4 month old lab, and he does a lot of moving about in his sleep. A few days ago he was fast asleep, when suddenly he just jumped up to a sitting position and started crying loudly. When me and my wife comforted him, he settled and went back to sleep.
I guess they have nightmares like we do.
I noticed that when i tell him off for, say, eating the furniture, he gets a sulk, but the next day he will do it again.
If i tell him off again, he will most likely have a disturbed sleep, and the next day will be well behaved. It's like he learns in his sleep!
Funniest thing he does while sleeping, he suddenly gets up, goes to another part of the room and sleeps again! It's like he's sleepwalking!
I have no way of knowing. Does anyone here? All we know is they dream. I just hope they are good ones.
Running, jumping, playing, eating, fighting, chasing. Anything at all. It's great when our dogs dream like that, makes us laugh.

Not all of those offspring will excel at what they were bred for - but they will still make great pets for people. A man who lives near me has a labrador that was bred to work but it didn't make the grade. No matter - it's a great pet.
Bettering the breed is the practice of only breeding the best specimens of the breed to keep the breed strong and hopefully better.
Cross breeding is NOT bettering the breed because cross breeds are mutts, not breeds.

I think it means different things to different people. I would have to say that if you breed any dog with any genetic diorders you are not bettering the breed. Also if you are breeding dogs that have a high possibility of being returned to the pound later on in life, like pitbulls, you are not bettering the breed. There are people that say that mixed breeds have fewer health problems, there are also people that say that purebreds have fewer. Even though there are studies on each side, it doesn't matter, people are going to believe what they want to believe. Just like breeders don't want to believe that they are not doing a good thing by breeding. No matter how many people tell them that 4-5 million animals are euthanized each year simply because there are not enough homes for them, breeders are still going to believe that there is no problem. I would have to say that there are way more mixed breeds in the pounds than purebreds, so I don't really agree with mixing breeds.

Mixed breeds do not have fewer health problems. This is a myth. If you breed two dogs with two completely different sets of health issues, how do the offspring end up with less health issues? How does that produce healthier pups?
OK I had to rethink what I wanted to say lol. Some breeds, especially working breeds, came about by individuals that noticed strong traits in certain animals and made a concerted effort, through careful breeding to establish those traits in dogs to do a certain job. Along the way if certain charistics were helpful or useful to the dog to better enable them to do their work, those charistics were strengthened as well. It's why a Collie has a thick coat or why a Dachshund has short legs. But how do you better a breed by creating a mix breed? There aren't many people who have actual working dogs, say you live on a farm and raise cattle or sheep (just one for instance) and using those dogs every day for real work. What are you doing other than making just another mixed breed, same as any of the millions sitting in shelters? It's just making more mutts.. It might help you to get some books on any breed of your interest and learn about the history of that breed. It takes some time, involves some reading but it might go a long way to helping you understand the difference if you understand how any given breed came about. You aren't going to improve on it for the simple fact that they already have all the charistics and traits they were bred for to begin with..it's the breed standard. All you can do now is strive to preserve those traits and strengthen them. I just don't know how to say it or explain it better

To me it is *trying* to create the perfect dog of that breed. Perfect in all ways: health, temperament, structure, type, working ability etc. It's an impossible goal, there will never be a perfect dog and we all have slightly different ideas about what "perfect" is anyways, but if you are trying for perfection then what you will get is generally of superior quality.
If you don't have a goal, you end up with mediocrity or worse.

cross breading is never bettering the breed because it isnt a purebred. how can u better something that doesnt exist. bettering the breed means ur breeding dogs that r very high quality and are of champion potential and even have some show wins under their belts. u r trying to create dogs that r of better show quality and lets face it u can show a mixed breed dog
To better the breed is to improve the breed, to strive for a dog as close as possible to the breed standard.
It also means to test for genetic defects, i.e. cataracts, hip dysplasia, etc., etc.
The reputable breeders here will be able to provide more detailed guidelines.

I think it means different things to different people. I would have to say that if you breed any dog with any genetic diorders you are not bettering the breed. Also if you are breeding dogs that have a high possibility of being returned to the pound later on in life, like pitbulls, you are not bettering the breed. There are people that say that mixed breeds have fewer health problems, there are also people that say that purebreds have fewer. Even though there are studies on each side, it doesn't matter, people are going to believe what they want to believe. Just like breeders don't want to believe that they are not doing a good thing by breeding. No matter how many people tell them that 4-5 million animals are euthanized each year simply because there are not enough homes for them, breeders are still going to believe that there is no problem. I would have to say that there are way more mixed breeds in the pounds than purebreds, so I don't really agree with mixing breeds.
Bettering the breed means breeding two purebreds of the same breed that both are the ideal representitive of that breed to make puppies of the highest quality.
You cannot improve a breed by introducing another breed into it's line. Then you have mutts.
Improving the breed means only breeding the best specimens in that particular breed. It means researching the pedigree of each dog and testing each dog for genetic flaws that may pass on to the next generation. It means only breeding dogs that have proven, in the show ring, their conformation to the breed standard. It also means only breeding dogs with favorable tempraments.
When you produce healthy pups that conform to the breed standard and are tempramentally stable, than you've helped to improve the breed.
Mixed breeds do not have fewer health problems. This is a myth. If you breed two dogs with two completely different sets of health issues, how do the offspring end up with less health issues? How does that produce healthier pups?
OK I had to rethink what I wanted to say lol. Some breeds, especially working breeds, came about by individuals that noticed strong traits in certain animals and made a concerted effort, through careful breeding to establish those traits in dogs to do a certain job. Along the way if certain charistics were helpful or useful to the dog to better enable them to do their work, those charistics were strengthened as well. It's why a Collie has a thick coat or why a Dachshund has short legs. But how do you better a breed by creating a mix breed? There aren't many people who have actual working dogs, say you live on a farm and raise cattle or sheep (just one for instance) and using those dogs every day for real work. What are you doing other than making just another mixed breed, same as any of the millions sitting in shelters? It's just making more mutts.. It might help you to get some books on any breed of your interest and learn about the history of that breed. It takes some time, involves some reading but it might go a long way to helping you understand the difference if you understand how any given breed came about. You aren't going to improve on it for the simple fact that they already have all the charistics and traits they were bred for to begin with..it's the breed standard. All you can do now is strive to preserve those traits and strengthen them. I just don't know how to say it or explain it better

It also includes doing testing of all breeding stock so as to decrease incidence of genetic ick such as hip and elbow dysplasia, eye diseases, heart and endocrine disorders as well as poor temperament that does not match the breed description.
Bettering the breed means removing from breeding any dogs who do not closely match the breed standard or who when bred produce dogs with faults that degrade the breed in any way.
Bettering the breed means looking at virtues as well as faults and doing a breeding to highlight these virtues while endeavoring to limit faults. (IMO a dog with no virtues and no faults is NOT a dog who should be bred as he has nothing to contribute).

To me it is *trying* to create the perfect dog of that breed. Perfect in all ways: health, temperament, structure, type, working ability etc. It's an impossible goal, there will never be a perfect dog and we all have slightly different ideas about what "perfect" is anyways, but if you are trying for perfection then what you will get is generally of superior quality.
If you don't have a goal, you end up with mediocrity or worse.
Hey, now that's just mean. I'd never say that mixed breed dogs should be bred on purpose (personally, I included "designer" breeds like schnoodles in that, too) but I also wouldn't start calling mutts "fugly" and "useless"! It means his thyroid gland isn't functioning properly.. He is over weight, tired, maybe snappy... Before you put him on medication... get a couple of tests to make sure.. There are other factors that can affect a thyroid test.. You don't want to put them on thyroid medication if you don't have to, once you do, the thyroid stops functioning on it's own entirely..
The thyroid gland in humans secretes hormones that regulate a bunch of different functions. Usually if something is wrong with it weight goes way up or down with no connection to eating habits. But lots of other discomforts can happen...usually in humans it can only be treated with medication, but as long as its treated it doesn't harm anyone. i have no idea with dogs.
Ask the vet to explain it to you. That is their job.

my dog has been shaking and panting for 5 days now. the first night she did it, i let it slide. but after the 2nd night, i took her to a vet and they said there was nothing wrong.
but she still keeps panting and shaking, she seems to be clinging to me.. wanting to sleep on top of my head and next to me (which she never does). she also wants to climb on the arm of the sofa and sit on the coffee table. and she cries a lot.

This helped me dog, who lived to be 14. It shouldn't be to threatening if she is young, and if the vet figures it out, he/she can give her some meds.

Is she drinking and eating and pooping and all that? Is she sleeping at all? Any signs of something wrong like diarrhea or vomiting or fever? Lost weight? Any of these would be cause to get to a vet.

hi i have a 4 year old husky, but today i sat down by him and was feeding him outside, and i saw this white liquid type stuff around and in his mouth and it kept coming a little bit, im not sure if he was doin any exercise before i came outside, ( you know when dogs run or do something like that they get a little bit of white foam in there mouth) but this was differant and i dont think he was doing anything. maybe he was barking.

Get a water mister spray container like in the make-up or garden area - brand new.. and clean. Fill with cool water or add a ice cube or 3. When you see him looking a little thick, hold his head lightly and spray the side or even the front of the inside of his mouth so he is drinking in small swallows. If it's cool water, a Husky will like it.
This is HOT weather and you need to be wary of heat exhaustion --- which comes before heat stroke which is the SHOCK part of over heating.
Put in enough water in his food so his kibble will float; this will help him get extra water when he eats.
Set out a large, large, horse size bucket of water. tie it or anchor it so he can't tip it over. Very important: make sure water s t a y s in the shade all day long !
Put out a inexpensive toddler kiddy pool in the shade and half way fill for him to lie in. Throw some ice cubes in it and show him.
Does he have a really, super good, area of shade ?
I'd see if you can't put up a window box fan so it won't tip over if he bumps it or sits on it or Better. a high velocity fan so he can lie in front of it. The fan needs to be protected from rain, too.

He's probably simply smelled something tantalising that's made him salivate excessively. My dog ends up with long tendrils of white foam hanging from her mouth when she's been sniffing something nice. It's horrible! lol
The rabies thing could be a possibility at a long stretch depending upon where you live and whether it's applicable.
I wouldn't be worried unless your dog is an outside dog that is exposed to wild animals and has not had it's yearly rabies vaccination. The second thought that would come to me would be if there are any poisons your dog could have come into contact with. You should watch the dogs behavior if it becomes lethargic or starts vomiting I would go to the vet.
I got really worried because my dog(weenie doggy) did that before and I ran and got my mom but she said that he had did this before and it was caused by a frog lol...he picked up a frog with his mouth and I think it had some kind of stuff in its skin and it make him do that..it wasnt just a little bit of running and playing foam either...it was pretty bad lol..but there is also the possibility of rabies. He could have also got into something toxic and its making him sick...you need to keep a close eye on him but if you see him with a frog you know thats it lol.
If you let your dog outside alone, then maybe it got bitten by an animal with some sort of sickness. If your dig starts to show any signs of viciousness then take it to the vet right away. Well you should take it to the vet NOW. They will help your pooch.

My Great Pyrenees gets froth on around his mouth in the summer, but he has all his shots so I don't worry too much. I figure its just something the larger Mastiff breeds do. I hope your dog has his annual rabies vaccination, if rabies is a problem where you live. In the US all dogs are required rabies vaccines.
OMG stop telling this person his dog has rabies.. He was probally running around a bit before you came out, and if its warmer outside where you live, it was probally just drool (slobber). And if he is anything like my lab then it will happen, make sure he/she has plenty of water outside, especially on warm days.
I hope you had him vaccinated against rabies, because white foam is the first indication of rabies.

He's probably simply smelled something tantalising that's made him salivate excessively. My dog ends up with long tendrils of white foam hanging from her mouth when she's been sniffing something nice. It's horrible! lol
The rabies thing could be a possibility at a long stretch depending upon where you live and whether it's applicable.
I wouldn't be worried unless your dog is an outside dog that is exposed to wild animals and has not had it's yearly rabies vaccination. The second thought that would come to me would be if there are any poisons your dog could have come into contact with. You should watch the dogs behavior if it becomes lethargic or starts vomiting I would go to the vet.
I got really worried because my dog(weenie doggy) did that before and I ran and got my mom but she said that he had did this before and it was caused by a frog lol...he picked up a frog with his mouth and I think it had some kind of stuff in its skin and it make him do that..it wasnt just a little bit of running and playing foam either...it was pretty bad lol..but there is also the possibility of rabies. He could have also got into something toxic and its making him sick...you need to keep a close eye on him but if you see him with a frog you know thats it lol.
If you let your dog outside alone, then maybe it got bitten by an animal with some sort of sickness. If your dig starts to show any signs of viciousness then take it to the vet right away. Well you should take it to the vet NOW. They will help your pooch.

My Great Pyrenees gets froth on around his mouth in the summer, but he has all his shots so I don't worry too much. I figure its just something the larger Mastiff breeds do. I hope your dog has his annual rabies vaccination, if rabies is a problem where you live. In the US all dogs are required rabies vaccines.
OMG stop telling this person his dog has rabies.. He was probally running around a bit before you came out, and if its warmer outside where you live, it was probally just drool (slobber). And if he is anything like my lab then it will happen, make sure he/she has plenty of water outside, especially on warm days.
I hope you had him vaccinated against rabies, because white foam is the first indication of rabies.

My shepherd mix is about 10 years old and is restricted to a gentle leader outdoors. It has been very very hot, and whether it is the heat, her noise phobia (thunder, guns, planes, etc) or something else is bothering her, she doesn't want to take a long walk. I rescued a siberian mix once and I'm pretty sure she wasn't mixed with chow, something with less hair than a sibe because this dog had less fur than some of my shepherds, and her tongue was black and pink. A dogs skin can be the same way, mixed colors.

A Chow does have a bluish/black tongue. The tongue is not pinkish. Any breed of dog can have black/dark spots on its tongue, or on its body(skin). My yellow lab has black spots on her skin under her yellow fur.

I am a GOLDEN RETRIEVER breeder and have many pups from previous litters who stay with me while their families are vacationing to avoid "Boarding" them in a kennel. I actually board dogs at my house (one at a time of course) to have the loving home environment. Plus they can have more attention that way.
What does a 'distemper' shot do for cats?
Does it make them less aggressive? I adopted a cat ( 11 months old )and have not gotten him his distemper shot yet... but i'm hoping that once i do he will settle a little because hes become slightly more aggressive than usual. Thanks

I caught a Butterfly and I put sticks, flowers, grass, ect. Well I don't really no wut else do you have any ideas?

What do you with a quarantined dog?
Long story, I got a black newfoundland puppy for my birthday and she was born in april. Two weeks after I got her (she was 3 mths. old), my other dog (pitbull mix 3 yr. old male) and her were outside when we found a dead raccoon. We went to go run errands so we let them hang out in the backyard. We called Animal Control to pick up the dead raccoon and they contacted the Health Dept. The only choice they gave us was to either put her to sleep or quarantine for 6 months. We ended up quarantining her to her own space in the yard w/o any human contact or animal contact. The Health Dept. guy knows she doesnt have rabies and knows we are going to let her out. She has never showed any signs of rabies. Lately though, she has become really depressed. She barely eats and walks around. She isnt as vibrant as she use to be. Is there any foods I can give her to fatten up, any toys she can interact with to keep her busy. Do they have to keep her there for 6 month? Do they have a right to do that?

This sounds totally crazy to me. When an animal is quarantined It's kept by some sort of animal control not caged off from human contact on your own property. No wonder she is depressed having to go through this.
Unless an animal has been taken to a country with quarantine restrictions where an animal has to be kept for 3-6 months (it's never with you) I have never heard of a quarantine lasting more than 21 days at the very most. Usually more like 10-14 days. We had a dog that had bitten at our shelter a few weeks back and I'm sure it was only 10 day quarantine.
I would look into the legality of this. It really does not seem right to me.

If the raccoon tested postive for rabies then yes you have to keep for quarantined. She could of gotten rabies from the raccoon. if you let her out before the 6 moths are up and the Health Department finds out they can come in and take your dog. It is their right and responsiblity to keep the public safe. Good Luck.

What I have read seems to indicate 14 days as the usual quarantine time frame for a possible exposure. But I am dismayed as to why it would continue if it is shown the animal did not have rabies.
Anyway that said personally I would let her in my home and give her my attention by playing with her. I would not let her have contact with other (outside) animals or humans but I would personally have contact with her and let her play with the other dog with whom she found the raccoon and all the toys that they own. Of course this is just my personal choice, it is up to you what you choose to do.

quarantine for a rabies scare where i live is 10 days. unfortunately they took the carcass away, you could have paid to have it checked for rabies by a university or veterinarian (animals must be deceased to check if they had it). i would talk to a vet or another person at animal control to see if you really need to keep her quarantine for 6 months. you didn't mention your other dog needing the same quarantine. if the older dog isn't in quarantine then your pup shouldn't be either.

First off the signs of Rabies show up in 1-3 months so why do you have to isolate her for 6 months? Also rabies is more rare then they make it out to be. I would forget the incident ever happened and mabe someone should call animal control on that guy! What a moron besides if the animal was already dead when the dogs found it then they couldn't have been bite by it! Forget about it let the poor dog out.

They can't just come into your yard, make demands, take your dog or kill it without a court order. You need to call legal aid or an attorney. Nobody quarantines for 6mo that I have heard of. If an unvaccinated dog bites someone here, it is taken into quarantine for ten days. I don't even think rabies has the ability to have a 6mo incubation period? You need some legal advice, not dog advice.
When you allow anyone who thinks they have some authority to push you around like this it hurts everyone in society. The Constitution was written for a reason. But your rights are only worth what you are willing to defend them from. Unless this idiot comes to your door with a court order, they have no power.

We are considering the idea of adding a dog to our family. We currently have an 18 month old son and are expecting again in the end of September (another boy!) We would most likely adopt a puppy (as opposed to an adult dog) so they would grow up accustomed to our children's presence/behavoirs.
We are living in a 900 square foot apartment. I don't work and my son and I spend our afternoons at the park so excercising the dog on a daily basis wouldn't be a problem.
The only hesitation is my husband is concerned that I will end up with "too much on my plate." Has anyone been in a similar situation to ours? Would you recommend following through with a puppy adoption or waiting?

I think you would be fine. If you already have puppy experience, then you know what you're getting into. My only suggestion would be to wait a little while after your second son is born, so you don't get super overwhelmed. New babies take a lot of attention, and you probably wouldn't want to deal with a puppy at the same time. But you seem to have enough time to have a dog, and are willing to give it plenty of exercise, etc.
You would have to be careful because puppies are very mouthy and might hurt the kids. If it were me, I'd get an adult that was over the chewing and biting phase. I'm partial to beagles because they're so good with kids, but there are other breeds good with kids, too. Getting an adult would also let you choose a dog knowing his temperment already, so it won't be a surprise. And the older ones are often housetrained, which would take a big burden off you. You can look on petfinder.com for puppies and dogs, though. Good luck!
puppies take more time than kids...I'd wait a couple of years and then get one when your boys are both a little older...plus a new puppy will chew your kids to death and climb all over them and they are not old enough to get away from a puppy yet.

Truely, I would wait until the 2nd baby is older and walking. I did that same thing and it was a disaster. You can't always be available to take the dog out so there are a lot of accidents. My kids were 6 mos and 3 years. The puppy was always nipping at my 6 month old and pulled her down and jumping on her (when she was sitting on the floor). It just got too dangerous and too exhausting. You'll have 3 children under 2.
While u pottly train ur 18month old at the same time u potty train ur puppy!! how cool would that be to get a new puppy also! It will be OK to get the puppy if YOUR husband helps with the children AND the puppy. Now if u are on your own, don't get one.
I would wait. Just think the baby is crying, needing to be changed then fed. Meanwhile the puppy is chewing and going to the bathroom all over the place. Not the perfect picture, that's just me though.
A Yorkshire Terrier would be a great dog with your young son and everything! They are cute sweet and very gentle even with other dogs and annoying children!
I personally would wait until you get more accustomed to taking care of your two boys (CONGRATULATIONS!!) Once you get good a juggling them (or when your youngest grows up and becomes less dependent on you) Then I would get a puppy. Like the first poster said, puppies are alot of work and you are already going to have a new baby and a toddler to take care of. But if you are bent on getting one now, go with a small dog that you don't have to worry about all that much! Good Luck and Congrats again!

I have four kids, a live in father in law and always had dogs, and frequently have had puppies here to socialize and train, and at least one cat, right now I have puppies at my house that I am babysitting, sixteen of them...So, no, there is no such thing as too much on your plate, you just learn to eat one bite at a time. Organization is the key.
I vacuum daily, mop daily, mow my own lawn, make all the meals, do the laundry, get up at all hours to feed the pups, clean up the doggie stuff, get the kids all off to school or not, do the dr. appts for the geezer,go to the dog shows to show my dogs, etc..., . It can be done, no worries, just depends on you, and my husband? well, let's just say he goes to work and after work and dinner his thumb gets sore from using the remote when he gets home..lol...
Puppies are a lot of work to train and still have all of those stages to go through ( just like your little ones!).If you have enough in you go for it, but you might also want to consider a bit older dog who is a bit more mature and who has been around children, they are not as nippy as puppies can be and are protective of the little ones.
My daughter was in the same situation and tried the puppy thing. Unfortunately the puppy did not work out and they were forced to find another home for him. you may want to wait until the children are a bit older as both children and puppies are time consuming (and worth it)
I had a son who were about 6 or 8 wekks old when we decieded to get a puppy. It was hard at times, because puppies have a tendency to want to chew on all sorts of things. I got lucky and got a very good puppy and was able to teach the puppy ( Prince) that I was the pack leader. The dog never growled at the kids ( if it would of growled at the kids I would have smacked the dog) and was very tolerent of the kids. At the same time, I taught the kids not to pull on the dogs tail or ears and to leave the dog alone when eating. ( If the children did these things they would get in trouble for hurting the puppy)
Puppies have a tendency to jump and I feel like it would be wise to wait on getting a puppy at this point in time.
You said that you want to get a puppy nad have it grow accustomed to your children's presence/behaviors.
I think that if you are REALLY INTENT ON GETTING A DOG ( PUPPY) YOU WOULD BE MUCH BETTER OFF WITH A SLIGHTLY OLDER DOG ( 2 TO 3 YEARS OLD). The reason being is that at this age the dog has gone through the chewing stage, may be housebroken and ( depending on the dog) will have a lot of patience with a young child. Young children do not understand the concept that this is a live animal and it has feeling too. A grown dog will walk away from the tail pulling and ear pulling, etc.
Please don't overlook a grown dog as they have many great qualities and can "grow" with your children, and YOU WILL NOT HAVE SUCH A LOAD ON YOUR PLATE.!!

I would recommend waiting a couple of years until the children are older. It would be so hard to have a puppy and two little boys at the same time. We got a small dog a couple of years before we had our daughter. We always said that we would never treat our dog any differently, she'll always be part of the family, ect. Well after we had our daughter we realized that things weren't working out. It was so hard dealing with our dog who had more accidents in the house and was wanting our attention all the time. Then she showed aggression towards our daughter and that was it. We had to take her to a rescue. Even though we felt like we had to do it, that was such a hard decision. My husband and I were both absolutely heartbroken. I can still cry thinking about it sometimes and this happened back in February. So just thinking about what I went through makes me think you should wait a couple years. Oh also kids can be really rough with dogs even if you teach them not to. And that's sad for the dog. If your baby has something like colic, imagine how much harder it will be to care for a puppy. Just think about it a little more!
I still think you would be better to adopt a full-grown dog. A puppy will have to go out every 2-3 hours- can you imagine having to bundle up both kids that often in the winter?

I 1 year old or older dog will be calmer and may be very well socialized. My 1-year old pound puppy LOVES kids (I have none). He gives the neighbour's 8 month old kisses all the time. He cries if I won't let him near kids we see while walking.

Getting an adult would also let you choose a dog knowing his temperment already, so it won't be a surprise. And the older ones are often housetrained, which would take a big burden off you. puppies take more time than kids...I'd wait a couple of years and then get one when your boys are both a little older...plus a new puppy will chew your kids to death and climb all over them and they are not old enough to get away from a puppy yet.

Truely, I would wait until the 2nd baby is older and walking. I did that same thing and it was a disaster. You can't always be available to take the dog out so there are a lot of accidents. My kids were 6 mos and 3 years. The puppy was always nipping at my 6 month old and pulled her down and jumping on her (when she was sitting on the floor). It just got too dangerous and too exhausting. You'll have 3 children under 2.
While u pottly train ur 18month old at the same time u potty train ur puppy!! how cool would that be to get a new puppy also! It will be OK to get the puppy if YOUR husband helps with the children AND the puppy. Now if u are on your own, don't get one.
I would wait. Just think the baby is crying, needing to be changed then fed. Meanwhile the puppy is chewing and going to the bathroom all over the place. Not the perfect picture, that's just me though.
A Yorkshire Terrier would be a great dog with your young son and everything! They are cute sweet and very gentle even with other dogs and annoying children!
I personally would wait until you get more accustomed to taking care of your two boys (CONGRATULATIONS!!) Once you get good a juggling them (or when your youngest grows up and becomes less dependent on you) Then I would get a puppy. Like the first poster said, puppies are alot of work and you are already going to have a new baby and a toddler to take care of. I have four kids, a live in father in law and always had dogs, and frequently have had puppies here to socialize and train, and at least one cat, right now I have puppies at my house that I am babysitting, sixteen of them...So, no, there is no such thing as too much on your plate, you just learn to eat one bite at a time. Organization is the key.
I vacuum daily, mop daily, mow my own lawn, make all the meals, do the laundry, get up at all hours to feed the pups, clean up the doggie stuff, get the kids all off to school or not, do the dr. appts for the geezer,go to the dog shows to show my dogs, etc..., . It can be done, no worries, just depends on you, and my husband? well, let's just say he goes to work and after work and dinner his thumb gets sore from using the remote when he gets home..lol...
Puppies are a lot of work to train and still have all of those stages to go through ( just like your little ones!).If you have enough in you go for it, but you might also want to consider a bit older dog who is a bit more mature and who has been around children, they are not as nippy as puppies can be and are protective of the little ones.
My daughter was in the same situation and tried the puppy thing. Unfortunately the puppy did not work out and they were forced to find another home for him. you may want to wait until the children are a bit older as both children and puppies are time consuming (and worth it)
I had a son who were about 6 or 8 wekks old when we decieded to get a puppy. It was hard at times, because puppies have a tendency to want to chew on all sorts of things. I got lucky and got a very good puppy and was able to teach the puppy ( Prince) that I was the pack leader. The dog never growled at the kids ( if it would of growled at the kids I would have smacked the dog) and was very tolerent of the kids. At the same time, I taught the kids not to pull on the dogs tail or ears and to leave the dog alone when eating. ( If the children did these things they would get in trouble for hurting the puppy)
Puppies have a tendency to jump and I feel like it would be wise to wait on getting a puppy at this point in time.
You said that you want to get a puppy nad have it grow accustomed to your children's presence/behaviors.
I think that if you are REALLY INTENT ON GETTING A DOG ( PUPPY) YOU WOULD BE MUCH BETTER OFF WITH A SLIGHTLY OLDER DOG ( 2 TO 3 YEARS OLD). The reason being is that at this age the dog has gone through the chewing stage, may be housebroken and ( depending on the dog) will have a lot of patience with a young child. Young children do not understand the concept that this is a live animal and it has feeling too. A grown dog will walk away from the tail pulling and ear pulling, etc.
Please don't overlook a grown dog as they have many great qualities and can "grow" with your children, and YOU WILL NOT HAVE SUCH A LOAD ON YOUR PLATE.!!

I would recommend waiting a couple of years until the children are older. It would be so hard to have a puppy and two little boys at the same time. We got a small dog a couple of years before we had our daughter. We always said that we would never treat our dog any differently, she'll always be part of the family, ect. Well after we had our daughter we realized that things weren't working out. It was so hard dealing with our dog who had more accidents in the house and was wanting our attention all the time. Then she showed aggression towards our daughter and that was it. We had to take her to a rescue. Even though we felt like we had to do it, that was such a hard decision. My husband and I were both absolutely heartbroken. I can still cry thinking about it sometimes and this happened back in February. So just thinking about what I went through makes me think you should wait a couple years. Oh also kids can be really rough with dogs even if you teach them not to. And that's sad for the dog. If your baby has something like colic, imagine how much harder it will be to care for a puppy. Just think about it a little more!
I still think you would be better to adopt a full-grown dog. A puppy will have to go out every 2-3 hours- can you imagine having to bundle up both kids that often in the winter?
You go to breastfeed and come out and the puppy has chewed a couch cushion to shreds.
I 1 year old or older dog will be calmer and may be very well socialized. My 1-year old pound puppy LOVES kids (I have none). He gives the neighbour's 8 month old kisses all the time. He cries if I won't let him near kids we see while walking.
A puppy is ALOT of work- a dog is ALOT of work too- just not AS much.

To make any money off of breeding dogs...you have to have many litters and many dogs to do it...plus spend little money so...forget genetic testing and veterinary care. I remember a cocker spaniel kennel found this way years ago.our cocker spaniel club spend hours shaving down matted to the skin dogs...many who were so matted, male dogs were sterile because matting around thier testicles were so tight, it cut off circulation. Many puppies found were so under weight, it's a miracle they survived.adult dogs so thin they only weighed 12 pounds (average cocker weighs about 25 lbs). Our cocker club helped the local humane society nurse these dogs and puppies to health and helped find homes for them. The breeder was charged with animal abuse and fined and breeding rights taken away by AKC. It angered me emensly that someone could be so selfish.
I don't think you were being stuck up like one answerer stated, at all...you were trying to open eyes of people who breed or want to breed thier dog with no knowlege at all. This was educational to many who don't realize the seriousness of what is going on in this country with BYB. When people on here critisize BYB and puppy mills...this is why.because they have seen this and many have no clue how bad kennels like this can be. I think it may take someone to exprience a scene like this..it's not pretty.I find it funny that the sign entering her property said "by appointment only" .I guess she had to be prepared to have people over to see her kennel.and do a quick "clean up" before people came by to visit.

Ours is a crisis situation and anyone who makes their living, even under the best of circumstances for the female dog, should go to work themselves and not place the burden paying the bills on their bit*%26. I do recoginze that their are reputable breeders. Ones that care about the breed and keeping the bloodlines clean as not to breed in flaws, etc. I usually find they are AKC certified and that is about it. Backyard breeders is everyone's problem. Be you for it, or against it. Dogs dying shouldn't be casual dinner conversation.

If it was a total stranger, my dog would try his best to scare him away or maybe even try and hurt him. But, if it was someone he recognized, I think he would just want to play with them.

I would like to believe mine would bark and alert me. The truth is they would either lick the robber to death and drown him in slobber or one would hold the flash light while the others showed him where the valuable are. Good thing their size is a great deterrent. Boy, am I in trouble!

If Someone broke in one dog would go get a ball for them to throw the other would go under the bed and bark. Yes, my house is real safe with those two at home. lol

When I was home alone once a friend of mine was coming to pick me up. He'd never met my dog before. Anyway I didn't hear him knocking on the door, but I did hear my dog growling and barking like she was ready to attack when he started to come in the door. She's a yellow lab and very, very friendly and sweet. But now we know she's very protective even though if when I'm playing with my dad and I ask her for help she bites me instead.

makes that woo wooo woo woo sound... you know the sort of talking one it's not a bark. My bullmastiff does it and his lips pucker over his teeth (so you cant see his teeth) he looks so cute, he does it when i give him certain commands or when the cats are sitting on my lap! Spelling and grammar are important. Do a spell check. I noticed someone else found another spelling error.
Maybe use a lighter, brighter color than the dark blue so the letters pop out more. Choose a regular font in the title instead of an italic to make it easier to read - I might also choose a stronger, blockier font overall to make it easier to read from distance. Make it so somebody can read it from far away.

I feed my pug science diet because i find it has nutritional values. It depends on what you dog prefers my dog prefers science diet because propably becasue he is a puppy and he can get chicken in it so it's best if you get all three brands at once and see which one your dog prefers depending on if he likes dry food or wet food. All the three brands are great but see which one he likes.
Well my dog was eating pedigree for a long time and she loved it now her tummy can't handle canned food anymore I heave to make her meals now hehehe . But I don't mind . But I hand nothing but good experience with pedigree .

I feed my dogs Natural Balance Food rolls, you can purchase them at PetCo, They are top of the line and you can freeze them. grate them. they are premeasured potions and they do no stink like canned. you can also mix them with dry food out of the choices mentioned the Iams is probably the best. If you want better food which you will spend alot more money on if budget allows you can buy food directly from the vet. Do NOT purchase any food made in China. only made in america and canada is the label i look for. then like in one of your other messages real meat should be the 1st ingredient on the list. hope this helps

It has the same types of ingredients as grocery store foods, just a bit better quality of those not-so-good ingredients. (Premium foods are those like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, etc..)
Another thing to be wary of: A lot of vets will recommend what they sell in their office. They get profit from the brands they keep on their shelves, that's why they push it. Truth is, vet schools don't focus a lot on nutrition. It's not saying that a vet is a bad vet because he recommends those foods, a lot of vets just are told "this is good food", so they pass the message along without proper nutrition knowledge. Also, some dog food brands (like Hills) support vet schools, so vets have heard of it from the time they start college, which makes them think it's good as well.

Contrary to popular belief some corn products are not all bad for dogs. I'm not a dog food expert, and my answer won't be popular but my two dogs eat pedigree, one being 11 years old and the vet said at his recent check up he is very healthy for his age! It's a matter of opinion.

Everyone is so against animal "byproducts" because it contains parts of the animal that humans don't consume, however human consumption and animal consumption are not always the same. A lot of the "byproducts" are parts of the cow, chicken, pig etc that the dog would eat in the wild. I get so mad evertime a pet food sales rep comes up to me at the pet store and tells me how bad the food I am buying is for my animal because of the "byproducts". Growing up on a farm I saw our dogs consume much more raw meat than regular dog food, and when they were eating raw meat they usually ate the whole carcass.
In the sense of mainstream dry or canned dog food, I think that all three are good brands. But I am no expert.
one word sums up all of those CRAP. i feed my dogs Chicken Soup for The Pet Lover's Soul Pet food. it is good for them and is made of more than just animal meals and by products. but if u r on a budget and those r the only ones u can afford i would go with the iams for the simple reason. it isnt as crappy as the other two but it is still pretty crappy. the guidelines that i use for choosing my dog's food is this. If the company takes the time and money to advertise their product on TV then u should stay away from it. or if u can find it at walmart then stay away from it. any food that advertises on tv is spending way more money on advertisement than on the food itself and that results in food that is pure garbage. so go to a pet store and look for foods u dont see on tv or at walmart and that is one of the better quality foods
