What do you think life looks like from your dog's perspective?

Sometimes my dog does things like "guard" when I run into someone on a walk and start talking (what he does is sit up behind me facing away from me, as if watching my back. He also will start racing around the house randomly. He also looks at me like he is trying to understand what I'm doing sometimes. What do you think he thinks he's doing? What does he think I'm doing when I'm watching tv, talking on the phone, going out, or working on the computer? I think my dog probably thinks I'm nuts and he's taking care of me.

I absolutely love your question! I myself wondered the same things too when my 3 yr old toy fox terrier behaves oddly.
I have gradually come to the understanding that everything they do is to try to tell us something. Just like humans know that we sometimes need to use gestures rather than words to help them understand, they probably feel the exact same way towards us, as barking will usually just get them in trouble.
Sometimes my terrier will look me in the eyes without blinking or moving...just concentrating real hard on my eyes. I took her up on the staring challenge one day and after 2 minutes of staring each other down, she ran to her leash. So, I took her out and she immediately went to the bathroom. She only poos outside so its imperative to walk her regularly. But in a household of 4 people, its hard to keep track of whether or not shes already been walked. Now, whenever she stares anyone down, we know what she wants.
Your dog is most likely a very intelligent companion. Dogs that know when to be on guard have better chances of survival than dogs that are friendly to anything that moves. Your dog guards you because it recognizes you as their friend or maybe even caregiver. Regardless of who they think you are to them, you are important enough to them to protect.
As for the racing around the house bit...I have heard different interpretations of this behavior. It could be that they are just playful or...they could be chasing something that we humans don't see. I know its eerie but I honestly believe that animals have a sixth sense...like babies may have.
Sounds as if you have a very perceptive, smart dog who wants to understand you.
Why don't you go to the library and get a book on dog behavior, then you will have some idea of your dog's thinking and begin to understand him.
Yep, I'm pretty sure they think we're totally nuts. They probably do think they are taking care of us. I think they see life like the dog in the Beggin Strips commercial- It's BACON!! lol
To understand a dog perspective, you need to befriend with the dog. If tarzan know what his primate friend think, then you should to. Eat bone, spray the street light with your wee, chase the postman and sleep in the tiny dog house.
A dog has a curious syndrome. Easy to get fall into hi-rate heart bumping when you do meet a stranger. Nor jealousy or ego, but the dog is a man best friend. Alien going to conquer the world, so the dog will be a hero.
Your question is relate to Ace Ventura, or Doctor Doolittle. Since both are busy, then I need to spend my time answering yours. Give your dog viagra, and then you can tell me what your dog think. But it shouldn't happen. You're dog gonna get killed. That should be your next question, if you care about it.
But then, when you put your psychic thing on your dog's mind when your male dog see you're watching tv. The dog will think, you are very bore lazy guy.
When you talking to the phone, the dog think, he thought you're crazy, since nobody infront of you, or you must be talking to soul that he can see infront of you, if exist.
When you going out, the dog think, you must need a fresh air, so bring him out, since he's a man best friend.
When you go working, he think, ah... new bone, new Friskies, new treat, buy me new one, or atleast get a hottie lady dog from petshop.
When you're on computer, the dog think at said, "At least, show me Paris Hilton undress."
So, if you think I'm wrong, then you MUST know what your dog think about you.
The dog need your trust, and your treat.
