What does POS stand for?

When refering to a dog, what does POS stand for?
Answers:
Piece of sh*t. It is used by some lower mentality users who think all dogs except theirs are worthless.
peice of ****
position of sex (doggy style)
Piece of sh%#
Point of sale?
POS means Point of Sale!
Piece of S h it.
Any mutt mongrel mixed breed most purebreds that people spend a fortune on.
Sometimes if its stated it IS a POS (piece of ****) it gets the point across that its just a mutt and not worth the moey you paid for it and that you were wrong to give someone money for their mistakes.
Mixed "Designer" Breeds (If you can call them that...) such as anything _____Poo or _____Doodle would be considered a POS.
They're high priced mutts and by buying one, you've supported a puppymill or backyard breeder who's only out to make a buck off their "Special" dogs.

What does my dogs submissive behavior towards me mean?

I have an American Eskimo dog who I have had for nine years. Most of the time he is playful and happy but it seems whenever I approach him his ears flatten and his tail goes between his legs. He's never barked growled or bit me and I have never hit, been rough or even really raised me voice at him. He will cuddle with me and play with me but he always seems a little submissive and nervous. I know I'm supposed to be the "alpha" in the "pack" or whatever, but it makes me sad to think he doesn't trust me or he is afraid or doesn't like me or something. Can some one who understands dog behavior help me understand?
Answers:
It's getting so there's not one word in the English language I hate more than the word "alpha"!!
Your dog is 9 years old! Sounds like this totally new behaviour for him. He's doing his best to let you know that he's not feeling well - there's something wrong with him and he needs to get to his vet to get checked out.
Older dogs need more frequent check-ups, complete with geriatric blood work. Things can change so very quickly as they age. Please take him in for a check-up.
It's normal submissive behavior. He is not showing fear by lowering his head and tail, he is showing respect. He is just a naturally submissive dog and readily accepts you as his leader, which actually shows he trusts you. Remember, lowering the head and cowering in fear, are two totally different things.
He might just be a nervous dog who sees you as his leader. If he didn't trust you, I think he would be displaying more dominant behaviour in order to take control and to control YOU.
Was he abused before you got him?
I second walkinglady's idea that he might be trying to tell you that something is wrong. Is this new behaviour, or has he always been like this?
It may be how you are approaching him...talk softly to him when you approach and hold out your hand and then when he comes to you he can smell your hand. Dogs are generally submissive to their owners, they recognize you as 'the boss' or 'the big dog'...I would just sit with him ..dont look him directly in the eyes because if you stare at him it will also make him submissive..when you stare into his eyes you are telling him to do so. Just get down on the floor, talk softly to him, and a lot of petting never hurts. Good luck. =o))
Some dogs are just more nervous and more submissive than others. If he has never been abused or had someone be rough with him then it's just his nature and it would be very hard to try to change it. If his submissive/nervous behavior is not including growling ect I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe instead of approaching him stay a ways back and get him to come to you, use a treat and kind words that may help him be less nervous, he could just feel a little threatened when you come into his space.
It's a natural behavior for dogs to act submissive to the dominant/alpha dog of the pack. My dog behaves the same with me - especially when she sees me when I first come home.
I would think the longer you have a dog, the more respectful, submissive they would be at times just to reiterate that they understand their place in the scheme of things.
I wouldn't be horribly concerned about the behavior - but I understand how it can feel. When my dog behaves this way it almost makes me think she's afraid of me, or like she thinks she's in trouble for something when nothing is wrong.
When she's like that, I just make sure to be overly playful and friendly with her so she realizes she's welcome and accepted.. and that's usually enough to get to go back to her normal behavior.
Your dog has displayed this behaviour for 9 years now? Basically what your dog is trying to tell you is that he is not confident and it may have nothing to do with you, it may just be him and it also is something that should have been looked into many years ago as now it will take a lot longer to build his confidence.
Building his confidence requires a lot more than I can offer on this forum. If you want to change this behavior to get a more confident dog, I would suggest that you consult with a behaviorist and see if they are willing to work with you and your dog. This is something that can be fixed, but it will take time and you will probably need the outside help of a behaviourist.
Good luck with your dog!
I wouldn't worry too much. Though it isn't typical, my dog will sometimes do this when my father approaches her, and she's lived with us for 14 years. She respects him and sees him as the alpha dog - he's the head of the household, so it's only natural. Perhaps your dog is merely showing you respect. There's also a small possibility that perhaps your pup was abused previous to you getting him - but that's just a wild guess. My dog had been abused, and it took her a while to fully trust us, and as I said she still acts submissive and respectful to my father. Maybe your dog's bad memories are sticking with it?
first,i would recommend a good training program.i had a beautiful Husky that would do the same thing, except he did go after me.(he was very Alpha, and i didnt know better)I had to put him down and wish be would have been better trained in the first place, its just that kind of breed.Husky@Am.eskimos@such are a lot alike in behavior.please get help, now, before it becomes a serious issue.he could be ill,or someone has intimidated him without your knowledge,or you could be unknowingly playing into the matter and making it worse without realizing what you're doing wrong.good luck.Rowan
This is just his temperment/personality. He's a submissive and shy dog. You are not going to change his temperment, however, you can influence his behavior even at 9 years. Get some dried liver treats (these are really good for him), dogs love them. We use them in the show ring for "baiting" dogs in conformation and for training rewards. Keep them close to where you "hang out". When he approaches you, or you approach him, talk softly to him like "good boy", "good dog", encouraging him to come close, praising him, letting him know that coming close is a good thing. Reward him with the treats. After a short period, he will associate getting close to you with praise and treats. This will help his shyness and help him to gain more confidence in himself. He will learn that coming close and approaching can bring BIG rewards. Dogs love praise. I use praise almost solely in training as treats are not always available. Dogs respond positively to the praise we give them.
Be persistent and consistent. It takes some time. Good luck.
May Be your Eskimo dog fills nervous because you don't make times to go out and binned with your Eskimo!

What does my dog dream about?

he is lying down fast asleep making allsorts of noises, what could he be dreaming about?
Answers:
eating
fighting
chasing

could be anything, I like it when their legs twitch
anything...just like us
catching catz?
anything the dog can think what would you dream about well, i mean we can tell each other dogs can't, he could be anything from a happy, scarry, running, livking bones, those kinda of dreams who knows.
the dog would know but he/she cant tell us.
One big juicy bone.
nightmare? probably chasing a cat?
Running after something, I bet!
My dog does this too; happy doggy dreams, bet he's chasing cats!
probably
chasing a cat
a big juicy bone
a partner
and many more
may be anything.
food!!
dogs can dream happy dream, or sad ones...if you listen really closely to the breathing, you can tell when he's happy...plus he will wag his tail...when you hear a whimper, he's probably feeling like he's been left alone...
Do dogs dream? If you look at your dog while it's sleeping, sometimes you'll see its eyes move and twitch under its eyelids. Humans do this too, and we definitely dream. So researchers are almost positive that dogs have dreams too. But guess what? No one knows what dogs dream about. Maybe the next time your dog wakes up from a dream, you can ask it!
Anything, mine make a hell of a noise sometimes, when their asleep.
i'd love to know! Mine's a 4 month old lab, and he does a lot of moving about in his sleep. A few days ago he was fast asleep, when suddenly he just jumped up to a sitting position and started crying loudly. When me and my wife comforted him, he settled and went back to sleep.
I guess they have nightmares like we do.
I noticed that when i tell him off for, say, eating the furniture, he gets a sulk, but the next day he will do it again.
If i tell him off again, he will most likely have a disturbed sleep, and the next day will be well behaved. It's like he learns in his sleep!
Funniest thing he does while sleeping, he suddenly gets up, goes to another part of the room and sleeps again! It's like he's sleepwalking!
I have no way of knowing. Does anyone here? All we know is they dream. I just hope they are good ones.
Running, jumping, playing, eating, fighting, chasing. Anything at all. It's great when our dogs dream like that, makes us laugh.
My dog!!!
Food
Big juicy bones!
hahaha
Hi, well its obivious that he could be dreaming about anything!
*Fighting
*Eating
*Running
*all sorts of things just like us! i dont think you'll ever know for sure though

What does it REALLY mean to better the breed?

Some say cross-breeding is bettering the breed
some say purebreed strong traits are bettering the breed.
So what is it really?
Answers:
Bettering the breed is breeding with a specific, measurable goal in mind for what the dogs will turn out like.
Breeding to excel at conformation to breed standard, or to excel at whatever job it is doing, or whatever sport/activity it is participating in.
This is done by careful selection or sire (father) and dam (mother) in order to produce certain traits in their offspring. Not all of those offspring will excel at what they were bred for - but they will still make great pets for people. A man who lives near me has a labrador that was bred to work but it didn't make the grade. No matter - it's a great pet.
Bettering the breed is the practice of only breeding the best specimens of the breed to keep the breed strong and hopefully better.
Cross breeding is NOT bettering the breed because cross breeds are mutts, not breeds.
Generally cross-breeding creates mutts. However, if you only breed the small percentage of animals who are "true specimens" of the breed, you are not only enhancing the good qualities that you want to keep, but also strengthening the genes of "bad" qualities prevalent in certain breeds. For example, in German shepherds or other big breeds, you may increase the likelihood of hip dysplasia. Also, I believe there is concern that the gene pool will get too small, and eventually you will be breeding "cousins" which can lead to genetic problems.
Bettering the breed is breeding a dog that exemplifies the traits outlined in the breed standard. It goes without saying that you need conformation, temperament, and health - the total package. It doesn't necessarily matter how you get there but you won't succeed if your dogs are too highly inbred.
cross breading is never bettering the breed because it isnt a purebred. how can u better something that doesnt exist. bettering the breed means ur breeding dogs that r very high quality and are of champion potential and even have some show wins under their belts. u r trying to create dogs that r of better show quality and lets face it u can show a mixed breed dog
To better the breed is to improve the breed, to strive for a dog as close as possible to the breed standard.
It also means to test for genetic defects, i.e. cataracts, hip dysplasia, etc., etc.
The reputable breeders here will be able to provide more detailed guidelines.
Be sure to read this link, as it answers alot of the questions you've been asking.

Thanks!
I think it means different things to different people. I would have to say that if you breed any dog with any genetic diorders you are not bettering the breed. Also if you are breeding dogs that have a high possibility of being returned to the pound later on in life, like pitbulls, you are not bettering the breed. There are people that say that mixed breeds have fewer health problems, there are also people that say that purebreds have fewer. Even though there are studies on each side, it doesn't matter, people are going to believe what they want to believe. Just like breeders don't want to believe that they are not doing a good thing by breeding. No matter how many people tell them that 4-5 million animals are euthanized each year simply because there are not enough homes for them, breeders are still going to believe that there is no problem. I would have to say that there are way more mixed breeds in the pounds than purebreds, so I don't really agree with mixing breeds.
Bettering the breed means breeding two purebreds of the same breed that both are the ideal representitive of that breed to make puppies of the highest quality.
You cannot improve a breed by introducing another breed into it's line. Then you have mutts.
Improving the breed means only breeding the best specimens in that particular breed. It means researching the pedigree of each dog and testing each dog for genetic flaws that may pass on to the next generation. It means only breeding dogs that have proven, in the show ring, their conformation to the breed standard. It also means only breeding dogs with favorable tempraments.
When you produce healthy pups that conform to the breed standard and are tempramentally stable, than you've helped to improve the breed.
Mixed breeds do not have fewer health problems. This is a myth. If you breed two dogs with two completely different sets of health issues, how do the offspring end up with less health issues? How does that produce healthier pups?
OK I had to rethink what I wanted to say lol. Some breeds, especially working breeds, came about by individuals that noticed strong traits in certain animals and made a concerted effort, through careful breeding to establish those traits in dogs to do a certain job. Along the way if certain charistics were helpful or useful to the dog to better enable them to do their work, those charistics were strengthened as well. It's why a Collie has a thick coat or why a Dachshund has short legs. But how do you better a breed by creating a mix breed? There aren't many people who have actual working dogs, say you live on a farm and raise cattle or sheep (just one for instance) and using those dogs every day for real work. What are you doing other than making just another mixed breed, same as any of the millions sitting in shelters? It's just making more mutts.. It might help you to get some books on any breed of your interest and learn about the history of that breed. It takes some time, involves some reading but it might go a long way to helping you understand the difference if you understand how any given breed came about. You aren't going to improve on it for the simple fact that they already have all the charistics and traits they were bred for to begin with..it's the breed standard. All you can do now is strive to preserve those traits and strengthen them. I just don't know how to say it or explain it better
Bettering the breed is when a breeding is done to create a dog that more closely represents the breed standard. It also includes doing testing of all breeding stock so as to decrease incidence of genetic ick such as hip and elbow dysplasia, eye diseases, heart and endocrine disorders as well as poor temperament that does not match the breed description.
Bettering the breed means removing from breeding any dogs who do not closely match the breed standard or who when bred produce dogs with faults that degrade the breed in any way.
Bettering the breed means looking at virtues as well as faults and doing a breeding to highlight these virtues while endeavoring to limit faults. (IMO a dog with no virtues and no faults is NOT a dog who should be bred as he has nothing to contribute).
Bettering the breed means looking beyond your own backyard, your own kennel, your own neighborhood, your own city and state then going to the effort of finding the dog who can best contribute the virtues your b*tch needs help highlighting whether he lives next door or across the country or the world (chilled semen is a WONDERFUL contribution to breeding dogs).
Bettering the breed means that when you own a stud dog you research what his line can contribute and you turn away b*tches who are either of low quality or have faults your dog cannot overcome.
Bettering the breed means you make the effort to monitor ALL the pups your dog/b*tch produces, not just the ones who are sold as show/breeding prospects. So you have a complete record of what your dog actually has contributed genetically.
I could go on and on... but I'll end with:
Bettering the breed means being HONEST about your dog, its faults, the faults it has produced, the genetic ick in your bloodline so people do not double up on that ick.
To me it is *trying* to create the perfect dog of that breed. Perfect in all ways: health, temperament, structure, type, working ability etc. It's an impossible goal, there will never be a perfect dog and we all have slightly different ideas about what "perfect" is anyways, but if you are trying for perfection then what you will get is generally of superior quality.
If you don't have a goal, you end up with mediocrity or worse.
Hey, now that's just mean. I'd never say that mixed breed dogs should be bred on purpose (personally, I included "designer" breeds like schnoodles in that, too) but I also wouldn't start calling mutts "fugly" and "useless"! I've never met a "fugly" mutt! I think you just insulted each of my children! :-)
That said, I think the original question has been pretty thoroughly and accuratley addressed. Bettering a breed comes form trying to create healthier animals within the breed standard.

What does it mean when the vet says your dog has low thyroid count?

Answers:
Exactly the same thing it means for humans!
Your dogs thyroid gland is for some reason not producing enough thyroxine.
There is a tablet form of this hormone which is readily available, cheap, and tasteless.
Once the dosage has been decided, your dog will need to be dosed every day for the rest of it's life.
There will be no side effects of the medication and your dog will regain energy, skin %26 fur will improve, etc.
Have had this problem myself and had pet dog with same problem.
Mother in Law also has the same problem, with pet dog with problem.
We laugh that we can all take teh same medications.
FYI my opinion Watch Diet,More exercise
It means his thyroid gland isn't functioning properly.. He is over weight, tired, maybe snappy... Before you put him on medication... get a couple of tests to make sure.. There are other factors that can affect a thyroid test.. You don't want to put them on thyroid medication if you don't have to, once you do, the thyroid stops functioning on it's own entirely..
The thyroid gland in humans secretes hormones that regulate a bunch of different functions. Usually if something is wrong with it weight goes way up or down with no connection to eating habits. But lots of other discomforts can happen...usually in humans it can only be treated with medication, but as long as its treated it doesn't harm anyone. i have no idea with dogs.
Ask the vet to explain it to you. That is their job.

What does it mean when my dog jumps on top of me when he sees me?Details are located below.?

Umm,I know this a very idiotic question to ask but I was wondering what did it meant when my Cocker Spaniel saw me and he would jump on top of me?
Please be nice on your answers!
Thanks you,bye.
Answers:
He missed you.
He loves you.
You smell like bacon...
Either hes humping you or hes excited to see his master
Most spaniels are really excitable and loyal, and will jump all over their master when they get home...my Cavalier Kinf Charles Spaniel doesn't stop licking me for about 5 minutes!
If you barely spend time with him, then he REALLY misses you and wants your attention.
I agree with Madi either he's happy to see you and is overexcited, which is very common or he is humping you as a sign of dominance, also quite common. Direct questions to an animal behavorist if you need more info.
He is happy to see you !
hes really happy to see you! and he missed you!
When a dog jumps up on u, it means that it is glad to see u.

What does it mean when my dog is shaking and panting at the same time?

my dog has been shaking and panting for 5 days now. the first night she did it, i let it slide. but after the 2nd night, i took her to a vet and they said there was nothing wrong.
but she still keeps panting and shaking, she seems to be clinging to me.. wanting to sleep on top of my head and next to me (which she never does). she also wants to climb on the arm of the sofa and sit on the coffee table. and she cries a lot.
something is obviously wrong. it seems to only start at night tho. what do i do? im so worried.
Answers:
I had a dog that had similar symptoms. He ended up having cancer. Take him back to the vet and have them check her oxygen levels.
maybe she is scared of something. Does she do that only in certain rooms? Take her to another room for a while and see if she still does that or relaxes
IT really sounds bad , i would try another vet.
I had a dog that did this once. The vet told us that it was a seizure. The best you can do for her is to just make her relaxed as possible. When she lays with you and starts, just slowly pet her. This helped me dog, who lived to be 14. It shouldn't be to threatening if she is young, and if the vet figures it out, he/she can give her some meds.
hey your gonna think im nuts but maybe she saw a ghost..hey before you knock it they say dogs can see these things when people cant lol
sounds like extreme overheatedness or dehydration. get her into a cold bath and have water availble immdeiately!
I would take her to the vet again. Make sure again there is nothing wrong. If there's nothing wrong, let him do the things she mentioned and see if she stops. If she doesn't, play with her or take her to the park to get her relaxed. If she shakes and pants that following night, try to comfort her and make her more relaxed and to calm down. Maybe, she's just sad. Make her more happy somehow. Hope this helps. :-)
And gave her some water. My dog did the same thing when she was thirsty. Except the crying part.
she is obviously scared of something, not to scare you or anything, but she might see something you dont. are you expecting thunderstorms or bad weather? maybe she had a bad experience you dont know about where ever she is shaking, for example if shes shaking in the kitchen, maybe a pot or pan fell and scrared her.
Poor baby! And poor you for all the worry and lost sleep.
Is she drinking and eating and pooping and all that? Is she sleeping at all? Any signs of something wrong like diarrhea or vomiting or fever? Lost weight? Any of these would be cause to get to a vet.
My dog, who was adopted, has shaking and panting drama for a couple of hours some evenings, usually when someone sets off fireworks or there is too much noise.
This dog psychology book said not to pet and pay attention to the behavior (assuming the dog is well). To let the dog get close but to be really calm.
I ended up giving him some benadryl, a small dose, and he got sleepy. I AM NOT RECOMMENDING GIVING ANIMALS HUMAN MEDICINE! but I did read it online so you might want to look it up online.
Good luck to you both!

What does it mean when a siberian husky has 2 colored eyes?

Answers:
It is normal for Siberian Huskies to have either two blue eyes, two different color eyes, a party color (which is both eyes have splashes of brown, blue or green in them), brown, light brown, amber and green eyes. Having bi-color eyes or party eyes does not mean that it isn't a purebred dog. That is just their breed, their nature. It is nothing to worry about :)
nothing; my huskie puppy has one blue eye and one red eye
Nothing. It's good that he/she has 2 eyes and not 6.
Its just part of their breed.
Your husky is bi-eyed. One is brown and one is blue I'm supposing? It's just another eye-color for huskies. Nothing to worry about. It just looks goofy.
Hi
It doesn't hurt them or affect their vision. I think it is just a genetic throw back from breeding with other domestic dogs down the line somewhere. Huskies usually have blue eyes...
It may be registered as a purebred, but somewhere down the road a different dog got in there.
Just like humans, it's just a dna allelle trait. There isn't anything wrong with it at all; just unique!
eaither its blind in one eye, or its just natural and came in its genes :)
Um... that it's eyes are 2 different colors?
Nothing, just part of their beauty.
it means you have a kick *** siberian husky haha
I have a siberian and he is parti-eye...one brown eye and one half brown/half blue eye.
It has nothing to do with breeding, non purebred, etc.
Huskies are very different that way.any sibes can come with many different markings and colours as well as eye colors and eye types. It is not a defect at all and does not mean they are blind!
Huskies are unique that way.no one looks like the other!
It means his eyes are 2 different colors. Nothing else.
Happens with people too. Like David Bowie.
http://www.facade.com/celebrity/photo/da...
It's one great thing about owning a sib. In the CKC and AKC they don't discourage them since it is part of there breed.
Nothing. It simply means that it picked up one gene color from it's mother and a different one from it's father.

it means you need to take a bath... hehe!
seriously, it's their way of showing affection and love.

What does it mean when a dog is in heat?

Specifically. I want details. Is it just the females or the males as well
Answers:
It means she has reached sexual maturity and is capable of breeding. No males don't come in heat. Comming in heat is like in humans having menstrual cycles. They come in heat generally bewteen 6- 14 months of age (varies on the dog). Generally it lasts about 3 weeks. When she is most fertile varies some in the dog but it lasts about 5 days. Spaying is always a GREAT suggestion, it prevents some cancers and lots of unwanted or homeless puppies and dogs.
just females. there area gets puffy and they bleed. its best to get them fixed so that you dont have to worry about that, or the dog getting ovarian cancers and such...
The above post said it pretty much. also if in heat is when they can become pregnent. heat lasts for a full month so be very carfull. and get her fixed asap.
your dog is ragging this means your dog is ready to mate so if you don't want puppies keep it away from male dogs
It means it's going to have babies.
It's just for female dogs.
It's like when a human female has her menstruation cycle. The dog's .. genitalia.. gets swollen and it bleeds. It usually only happens once a year for dogs, though. It's the one time a dog can mate and be able to actually make puppies.
haha.
Yea. My dog's in heat right now.
Also, they usually never leave people alone, as far as I've seen. They might howl or bark a lot and act like they have to go outside to go to the bathroom, when most of the time they're really just looking for a male dog to mate with.
just females when they are ovulating
Females in "Heat" or sometimes are referred to as being "in season" means that they are fertile and are ready to mate. Their genitalia will swell noticeably, and they bleed. Male dogs that are unfixed will respond and try to mount them and basically have intercourse.
it means female dogs that r not spayed can have " sex " with a male dog that is not neurted
Well its both but its different for both. Heat is mainly when the female dogs fertility is at it's peak, meaning she can get pregnant from a male dog. She'll also bleed so you might want to purchase dog diapers. For males it means that he might try to escape to find a female dog to be with. You can avoid all of this by simply getting your dog spayed.

What does it mean when a dog has white stuff aroun his mouth?

hi i have a 4 year old husky, but today i sat down by him and was feeding him outside, and i saw this white liquid type stuff around and in his mouth and it kept coming a little bit, im not sure if he was doin any exercise before i came outside, ( you know when dogs run or do something like that they get a little bit of white foam in there mouth) but this was differant and i dont think he was doing anything. maybe he was barking.
i am realy worried
thank you so much
Answers:
OHHHH Good Grief ! He doesn't have RABIES !
If it is hot where he is, drool will be a bit thicker, especially if he's been panting and he's outside.
Get a water mister spray container like in the make-up or garden area - brand new.. and clean. Fill with cool water or add a ice cube or 3. When you see him looking a little thick, hold his head lightly and spray the side or even the front of the inside of his mouth so he is drinking in small swallows. If it's cool water, a Husky will like it.
This is HOT weather and you need to be wary of heat exhaustion --- which comes before heat stroke which is the SHOCK part of over heating.
Put in enough water in his food so his kibble will float; this will help him get extra water when he eats.
Set out a large, large, horse size bucket of water. tie it or anchor it so he can't tip it over. Very important: make sure water s t a y s in the shade all day long !
Put out a inexpensive toddler kiddy pool in the shade and half way fill for him to lie in. Throw some ice cubes in it and show him.
Does he have a really, super good, area of shade ?
I'd see if you can't put up a window box fan so it won't tip over if he bumps it or sits on it or Better. a high velocity fan so he can lie in front of it. The fan needs to be protected from rain, too.
FANS and WATER are important in preventing heat problems.
I think this is what you are seeing.
possibly rabies
drull idontknow
dogs can be kind of grose
ummm could be rabies...or an infection from something that he ate
He's probably simply smelled something tantalising that's made him salivate excessively. My dog ends up with long tendrils of white foam hanging from her mouth when she's been sniffing something nice. It's horrible! lol
The rabies thing could be a possibility at a long stretch depending upon where you live and whether it's applicable.
I wouldn't be worried unless your dog is an outside dog that is exposed to wild animals and has not had it's yearly rabies vaccination. The second thought that would come to me would be if there are any poisons your dog could have come into contact with. You should watch the dogs behavior if it becomes lethargic or starts vomiting I would go to the vet.
I got really worried because my dog(weenie doggy) did that before and I ran and got my mom but she said that he had did this before and it was caused by a frog lol...he picked up a frog with his mouth and I think it had some kind of stuff in its skin and it make him do that..it wasnt just a little bit of running and playing foam either...it was pretty bad lol..but there is also the possibility of rabies. He could have also got into something toxic and its making him sick...you need to keep a close eye on him but if you see him with a frog you know thats it lol.
If you let your dog outside alone, then maybe it got bitten by an animal with some sort of sickness. If your dig starts to show any signs of viciousness then take it to the vet right away. Well you should take it to the vet NOW. They will help your pooch.
probably rabies
if you think he has rabies, he probably doesnt. he was probably just running or doing other things dogs do. but if you want to be sure then dont go near him and call the proper people
Barking in the heat, w/o water to drink will make them a little foamy at the mouth..
It has been hot lately. he may be overheating.
my rottie foams up sometimes, but drools a whole lot more!
I don't think it's rabies, unless you haven't vaccinated him?
and foaming usually occurs later, not right then and there. there are other symptoms to look for before he froths at the mouth.
I agree, though, he may be sick.
where I live, we have cane toads. they are highly venomous, and if a dog should mouth it, they get very sick, and some die.
take him to the vet, and have him checked out.
couldn't hurt, and makes you feel better.'

good luck
My Great Pyrenees gets froth on around his mouth in the summer, but he has all his shots so I don't worry too much. I figure its just something the larger Mastiff breeds do. I hope your dog has his annual rabies vaccination, if rabies is a problem where you live. In the US all dogs are required rabies vaccines.
OMG stop telling this person his dog has rabies.. He was probally running around a bit before you came out, and if its warmer outside where you live, it was probally just drool (slobber). And if he is anything like my lab then it will happen, make sure he/she has plenty of water outside, especially on warm days.
I hope you had him vaccinated against rabies, because white foam is the first indication of rabies.

What does it mean when a dog digs a hole and lies down in it?

My shepherd mix is about 10 years old and is restricted to a gentle leader outdoors. It has been very very hot, and whether it is the heat, her noise phobia (thunder, guns, planes, etc) or something else is bothering her, she doesn't want to take a long walk. She has to be leashed because she has a streak of fear aggression and cannot be relied upon not to run off helter skelter after a squirrel, motor cycle, etc. even though she knows to come when called... and does except when carried away on more important matters... I know that this is my fault, though I will say that she has been difficult to train. She needs a fenced in yard with supervision. I just wondered if there was any special signifigance to the digging in the dirt (she loves to do this for fun and when she is mad) and lying in it. She also loves to just lie down in a grassy place and become immovable/roll and roll. One of her nicknames is Cinnamon Roll. She is definitely slowing down. Please be constructive.
Answers:
keeping cool in the cool dirt ; instinct; dog whisper, cesar milan, national geographic channel to assist to make puppy happier ; long fur , heat, age and the inability to sweat , I can't blame her; I would want to lie down in the dirt and keep cool myself ; an animal has it right; no pressure, no cares; what is better than lying down and looking at the world and just enjoying life, nature , no stress - we need to follow animal's lead and don't worrry just be happy at the simple pleasures in life
Trying to get to a cooler spot
she is probably digging those holes and lying in them because it is hot out. the dirt underground is cooler. thats my guess.
It means she is hot and trying to cool down.
She is probably just hot and is doing it to cool her off or just likes the feel of the dirt on her
You have the dog outside in the heat. More than likely she isn't in a covered area. Its just their natural instinct to dig and get to the cooler dirt the cool themselves off.
I have a shepherd/pit bull mix that i rescued and she digs holes in any soft soil only to lay in them also. Like your dog my has a high prey drive and cant be left off a leash. I have two trainers for my dog and they say that she is hyper active and needs more exercise. She does this because shes bored, and because they dig the dirt in order to get to the cool earth underneath and cool off that way. She lays in her hole when it is hot outside.
Good Luck.
releasing frustrations,,, or just plain fun for her. my dog does it to play/ chase moles//// and cool off...i had to put fencing up to re-inforce areas she could get hurt... and let her do it in the other part of the yard. she comes back filthy and happy.
my dog had eight puppies and they all dug a huge hole to fit all of them but only the alfa-male got to use it
sry
thats a story not an answer =)
Remember that dogs, regulates their body temperature though there stomach that's why she lies on the cool moist ground.
When the summer heat is on all dogs prefer to sleep on grass or a pit. The earth is much cooler below the surface.
She is digging to a cooler spot in the ground. Nothing more, she's hot!
Your dog is basically trying to cool off. Literally and figuratively. Most dogs do the digging thing when they're upset, it's like when we go punch a punching bag to relieve stress. It's also been a very hot summer all over so it wouldn't be surprising to see your dog lying in a ditch to cool off (the further down you dig, the cooler it is, at least in warm weather; during the winter it's the opposite effect)
She's cooling off,
and she likes the Earthly smell.
I hope you have shade for her
along with fresh water.
they dig holes and lay in it because it's cooler for them.

What does it mean if my dog has 5 toenails on 1 foot?

o and what does it mean if she has a bump on her back? it was big but got smaller...
Answers:
The extra nail is called a dew claw, they're normal for certain breeds of dogs. I've heard they help dogs swim. Most vets recommend you get them removed because over time they irritate the dog and they get caught on things.
It is just a thing that happens on some dogs. don't worry about it. my dog has 5 toes too. I dunno about ur dogs back. my dog has a lump in his tail.
IT MEANS YA GOT FIVE TOE NAILS TO CLIP! LMAO
MY DOG HAS 5 ALSO I THINK ITS NORMAL!
It's called a dew claw
It's called a dew claw
If it has 5 toes and an inner claw, then it is called polydactil ( extra digit ) if it has 4 toes and a claw, it a dew claw, the limp on its back could be a sebacious cyst, like a white head, in growing hair causes a reaction, which builts up puss, like a spot, then bursts when the pressure is too much, look at the area and see if it has an opening, press it together gently, if its secrets puss, its a cyst, if it doesnt have an opening, it should be checked, could be a fat lump, could be more serious.
Vet Nurse
Having 5 toe nails is nothing serious, it happens in some dogs. If she has a bump on her neck and your concerned, take her to the vet irrispective it got smaller or not, its still there right!
all dogs and cats have 5 on ech hand paw what ever
my dog has 4 toes with nail. but one at the ankle that doesnt.
and my friends dog has 4 with nail and the one at the ankle with nail too.. bu its normal
It's called a dew claw. Alot of breeders remove them before they sale a puppy. They remove them because alot of dogs will hang them and tear them off anyway.
Are u sure it's not the dew claw??
If u are, then u have to worry about clipping 5 toenails on that foot.
supposed to have 5 toenails on each foot.a bump on back?? go to a veterinarian's office right away
That means that she was born that way. And about that bump i would keep in eye on it and if it gets worse again take it to the vet.

WHAT does it mean if a female dog is in HEAT?

what does it mean i found it in a question but i dont know wat it means!! im getting a BOY dog but i want to know wat HEAT means?
Answers:
HEAT is estrus. It's when the ***** is at a the most suceptible time to be bred. There are3-4 weeks to it. 1 week going in when there is some swelling at the vulva, 1 week in, some clear discharge is present from her vulva, and 1-2 weeks going out, when the discharge becomes bloody, and brownish colored
When a ***** is in "heat" she is ready to be bred. That is what female humans or any species (for that matter) do when they want to conceive offspring.
A female dog goes in heat usually every 6 months ( if not spayed). The heat cycle lasts 21 days. She will let a male bred her while in heat. The first signs of heat are a swollen vulva %26 a bloody discharge.
when it goes menstrual

What Does It Mean If A Dog Has Black/Purple Spots On Its Tongue?

My dog has black/purple spots on its tongue. My mom use to tell me that the spots meant that she (the dog) was a Chow Mix. But my friend told me that it means that the dog is Pure Breed. Whoes Right %26 Whoes Wrong?
Answers:
Shepherd girl is right, I don't know what's on the link she posted, but I have a registerd siberian husky and she has black on her tongue, I raise and breed shepherds and I know they're pure and sometimes they have a black spot on their tongue. I rescued a siberian mix once and I'm pretty sure she wasn't mixed with chow, something with less hair than a sibe because this dog had less fur than some of my shepherds, and her tongue was black and pink. A dogs skin can be the same way, mixed colors.
YOUR FRIEND IS AN IDIOT!
I breed dogs for a living. this charicteristic means your furry friend has some Chow Chow in his lil DNA
To prove your *dumbass* friend wrong, go to the nearest pet store, find a pure breed(anything but a chowchow), and pull his lil tounge out of his head and you will see your friend is completly full of you know what!
Your mother is correct, and your friend is an idiot.
Did you really have to ask? Mother ALWAYS knows best!
***EDIT***
After reading later answers I humbly admit that I only THOUGHT I knew the answer. I usually double check myself before giving out answers like this, too. It just goes to show how easy it is to believe that something is a fact just because you have heard it before. Shame on me.
it has chow in it
Mom yes / friend no. Mama smart / friend dumb. Mom um,hum /friend nu, uhh
i dont know..
i read the other comments and i learnt something today!
thanks for the question!
Mom is the winner.
my dog has the same spots and he has chow in him
They are both wrong, as well as, most of the people who answered before me. What your mom is telling you is just a misconception and what your friend is telling you is just an old wives tale.
Black spots are just extra pigment, that is all and any dog can have them, pure or mixed breed. Think of it like a beauty mark on a person.
ETA: I looked for a site to back up my answer, here is the link:
http://www.columbusdogconnection.com/bla...
it simple is PIGMENT.. nothing to do with CHOW and nothing to do with purebred,,,,, BOTH ARE WRONG.... simple PIGMENT!! geesh...
This business about black spot on tongue equals Chow, or some derivitive therefrom ... that's not an 'old wife's tale,' it's an 'old timer's tale.'
Back when the railroads were being built, many 'laborers' came here from foreign places. These laborers included construction workers, launderers, and cooks.
Now, feeding a bunch of hungry men on 'what you have' isn't always an easy thing, but coming to the supper table with nothing was a sure butt-kicking.
Keep in mind that this was before refridgeration, so meat was kept on the hoof, vegetables were mostly root vegetables.
So, when the buffalo have moved to lower ground, and all you have to cook with is whatever available meat you have and some onions, carrots, potatoes, flour, salt, pepper, and water what do you fix a bunch of hungry men? That's right, Bread and stew.
Oh, but wait, the buffalo have moved on ... so, where's the beef? Well, it ain't on the hoof, its on the paw ;).
But not all dogs were subject to being cooked as chow, only those with obvious imperfections - like having black spots on their tongues. So, when the cook went looking for what was later to be referred to as 'stewing beef,' he went looking for dogs with black spotted tongues; they were destined to be served in the form of stew.
Remember, this was back when there was no refridgeration and Chairman Gore had not yet invented his internet. So word of mouth was how stories got told. Well, the stories about how black spotted-toungued dogs were used as stewing beef to prepare chow for the railroad contractors got confused with the news of the introduction of the black tongued Chow-Chow into American culture, having been brought into the states by some of these 'cooley-laborers' (which is a different story altogether). With time, the stories got all messed up, and mixed up, to become "dogs with black spots on tongue are good for chow."
And to this day, when I see 'stewing beef' in the store, I think about where that bit of 'beef' comes from, of black spotted tongues, and of the the early railroader, the invention of the american 'classic' stew and, of course, how the introduction of the word 'chow' came into our language at about the very same time the Chow-Chow moved into our living rooms.
So you see, your friend and your mom are not necessarily wrong, its just their facts aren't right. But now, because Chairman Gore gave us this internet thingy ... I am pleased to give you the facts about what's right and what's wrong.
This just goes to show that there are so many people that THINK they have a clue and don't, but feel they need to answer questions all the same!!!!
As you have found from people who really do know what they are talking about, BOTH are wrong!!!
I have had Newfs for 16 years, I know none of them are mixed with Chow (thank God) , and many of them have a spot or many spots on the tongue. Then there are the ones that have NO spots..yet they are still purebred.
Just a bunch of myths that clearly MANY people actually hold as truth!!!!!!!
ok, well your mother is (OF COURSE) correct, and apperently
your friend knows nothing about dogs. Anyways the black/purple tounge spots are a characteristic of a Chow,
however, tounge spots have been seen in labradors, and pomeranians. Hope i awnsered your question!
-funnygirl
P.S My dog has black tounge spots, and she is a chow/american eskimo/black labrador mix.
A Chow does have a bluish/black tongue. The tongue is not pinkish. Any breed of dog can have black/dark spots on its tongue, or on its body(skin). My yellow lab has black spots on her skin under her yellow fur.

What does fleas look like on a dog or cats skin?

Answers:
A flee is like they said a small dark brown little bug. They will also jump. So if you see one, one minute its there and the next it just seems to disappear because it has jumped to another area. Be careful - if you get them in your house they can multiply by the 100's and the bad thing is the eggs they lay can survive in your carpet for up to a year before hatching.
my cat used 2 hav fleas... its like small black bugs crawling around or clenching onto the animal they can hurt the dog or cat super bad!! if ur dog or cat is scratching real bad chances r they hav fleas!!
Fleas are very small teardrop shaped brown or black bugs. They're quick, though. You're more likely to see "flea dirt"... flea droppings from their blood meal. If you see little black dots or flecks on the animal's skin, you can confirm that they are flea droppings by putting them in water... they will turn red.

What does boarding means?

Answers:
when i worked at a boarding kennel we took care of your dogs or cats and pet them and let them outside once a hour and fed them what the owner brought them. but not to bash my ex-job or any thing but i hated to see the dogs after the owner left and they started crying for there owners and somtimes they didn't even eat the whole time but if you have to, find the best place in your area for boarding your dog and quiz them and give your pets somthing from the house like some owners brought the dogs bed and somtimes there favorite toy.
Boarding is sending your dog to a kennel to be cared for while you are gone.
In most cases it means having your dog locked up for 22 hours a day in a cage.
Consider using something called "dog camps".
Sending to a vet or kennel to take care of your dog when you are out of town for a length of time...
Doggie day care
Boarding means they will house your dog %26 take care of them if you have the need. Like if you wanted someone to take care of your pet while you went on vacation!
boarding as in board and lodgings for a fee the advertiser will look after your pet feed it excersise it and bed it down
Boarding is a facility that takes care of your dog while you are away. There is also some programs that will actually come to your house instead of shacking your dog up in some cage. They are really good and nice. They walk your dog for like 30 minutes, feed/water them, play with them and groom/bathe if neccessary.
They will keep your pet for you while your on vacation...etc
Like a pet hotel.
Boarding facility. A place to put your animal in the care of employees when you go on vacation.etc
A lot of vet clinics or kennels offer boarding as a service to clients. (Ex: going on vacation, they will charge you a fee to house your dog/cat/etc... IN A KENNEL or CAGE). Although a lot of people choose this route, there are so many other options these days, Doggie Hotels/Spas, In home pet sitters, etc...with more PLUSH accommodations.
I am a GOLDEN RETRIEVER breeder and have many pups from previous litters who stay with me while their families are vacationing to avoid "Boarding" them in a kennel. I actually board dogs at my house (one at a time of course) to have the loving home environment. Plus they can have more attention that way.

What does a 'distemper' shot do for cats?

Does it make them less aggressive? I adopted a cat ( 11 months old )and have not gotten him his distemper shot yet... but i'm hoping that once i do he will settle a little because hes become slightly more aggressive than usual. Thanks
Answers:
Distemper is a disease carried by most animals. Its actually more contagious than rabies and higher death rate than parvo. If an animal survives distemper its usually with neurological damage.
Get the cat its vaccinations.
It has NOTHING to do with the temperment of the cat. It is a virus that can make them very ill. It is a good idea to get the vaccine, along witht the Rabies vaccine. It is also a good idea to get the cat neutered if he is not laready. That can help with the aggression problem.
It protects the cat from a deadly disease.
It should not have an impact on the temperament of the cat.
Distemper is a disease, so the distemper vaccine will prevent him from catching the disease, but shouldn't have any effect on his personality.
next time look at the subject ur puting you question on. u put it on dogs. this is a cat question right?? well yes, my cat got that shot and now he's very calm. well calmer than usual at least. you should take your cat to get the shot. good luck =D
The name "distemper" has nothing to do with temperment. A feline distemper vaccine actually contains 2-3 vaccines in one (similar to a canine distemper vaccine which contains 3-5 vaccines) - the number depends on the brand being used. A feline distemper vaccine prevents diseases that can cause respiratory infections, neurologic symptoms, and organ failure. Feline distemper vaccines must be boostered in a series, so your cat requires at least 2 shots, a few weeks apart at this age in order to be sufficiently protected. If you adopted him from a shelter or humane society he might have already been vaccinated once. Find out or take him to the vet anyway, it won't hurt him to have it again.
Distemper shots prevent your cat from getting a disease called distemper. Although the shot may slow your cat down for a day it won't have any long term effects on your cats temperment. Getting the cat spayed or neutered may calm them down tho.
Distemper has absolutely NOTHING to do with temeprament/aggression, etc. Panleukopenia aka Feline distemper is a very contagious and usually fatal viral infection. It affects the bone marrow, causes loss of appetite, vomiting, diarreha.
******Feline distemper is NOT the same as canine distemper and can't be passed from one species to the other******
**** Distemper(Panleukopenia) is NOT Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis...they are two totally different things. and it is also NOT Feline Calicivirus which is also totally different..FVR is caused by the herpesvirus and FC is caused by the calicivirus******
If this cat has had a change in attitude you need to take him to the vet for a good exam..he could have a tooth problem or any number of other issues going on and if medical issues are ruled out and he has already been neutered (if he hasn't been neutered get it done asap, it will most likely help)it is likely to be a behavioral issue that you will need to work with.
Feline distemper is also known as Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis- Calici Virus
It is a group of very cantagious and common diseases that causes respiritory infection.
Symptoms: Coughing, sneezing, and discharge from the eyes and nose, and can even lead to pneumonia and/or blindness.
Cats who have recovered from this can become lifetimes carriers and will pass it to other cats. Since you don't know the history of other cats, best to get your cat vaccinated.
Kittens go through a series of three. The first one in normally given at 6 wks, the second is at 9 wks, and the last one is at 12 wks. But you can start her series now. Just every three weeks until the last one is given. The last one is for the year and after you will have to get her vaccinated annually.

What does a butterfly eat?

I caught a Butterfly and I put sticks, flowers, grass, ect. Well I don't really no wut else do you have any ideas?
Thanx
Answers:
i think they eat flower necture, put some flowers in with it
all that stuff is wut they eat but you might try sugar water too lie a hummingbird mix
why is this question in the dogs section?
anyway. nector i guess
its prolly going to die if you dont let it go. butterflys and etc dont often do well in a glass jar or whatever small container you prolly have it in especially since you have no idea how to care for it.
nectar. or small insects, maybe?
Nector and pollen. Let the butterfly out or you will kill it.
Brace yourself: they tend to feed off carrion.
Depending on the species of butterfly it is. I would actually let the butterfly go because then it wont starve to death or anything else in this temp habitat that might harm it. Butterflies tend to eat flower nectar, and because it uses a proboscis like a fly does, there is no way it can eat a stick. Special butterfly food are mixed with water and are put on a plate where they can eat it. Other butterflies may eat some sort of mashed up leaves but keep this in mind: ONE TYPE OF BUTTERFLY WILL ONLY EAT CERTAIN FOODS. So identify your butterfly, dosome research and then feed it. But also, food is not enough. Air and the freedom to move around is other elements for keeping butterflies.

What do you with a quarantined dog?

Long story, I got a black newfoundland puppy for my birthday and she was born in april. Two weeks after I got her (she was 3 mths. old), my other dog (pitbull mix 3 yr. old male) and her were outside when we found a dead raccoon. We went to go run errands so we let them hang out in the backyard. We called Animal Control to pick up the dead raccoon and they contacted the Health Dept. The only choice they gave us was to either put her to sleep or quarantine for 6 months. We ended up quarantining her to her own space in the yard w/o any human contact or animal contact. The Health Dept. guy knows she doesnt have rabies and knows we are going to let her out. She has never showed any signs of rabies. Lately though, she has become really depressed. She barely eats and walks around. She isnt as vibrant as she use to be. Is there any foods I can give her to fatten up, any toys she can interact with to keep her busy. Do they have to keep her there for 6 month? Do they have a right to do that?
Answers:
This sounds totally crazy to me. When an animal is quarantined It's kept by some sort of animal control not caged off from human contact on your own property. No wonder she is depressed having to go through this.
Unless an animal has been taken to a country with quarantine restrictions where an animal has to be kept for 3-6 months (it's never with you) I have never heard of a quarantine lasting more than 21 days at the very most. Usually more like 10-14 days. We had a dog that had bitten at our shelter a few weeks back and I'm sure it was only 10 day quarantine.
I would look into the legality of this. It really does not seem right to me.
JR you don;t have that option where I live for sure. It maybe different in different places, but I know 100% where I live self qurantine is NOT an option.
If the raccoon tested postive for rabies then yes you have to keep for quarantined. She could of gotten rabies from the raccoon. if you let her out before the 6 moths are up and the Health Department finds out they can come in and take your dog. It is their right and responsiblity to keep the public safe. Good Luck.
I don't really understand, if they have determined that the raccoon did not have rabies why do you need to quarantine her still? And why for 6 months? What I have read seems to indicate 14 days as the usual quarantine time frame for a possible exposure. But I am dismayed as to why it would continue if it is shown the animal did not have rabies.
Anyway that said personally I would let her in my home and give her my attention by playing with her. I would not let her have contact with other (outside) animals or humans but I would personally have contact with her and let her play with the other dog with whom she found the raccoon and all the toys that they own. Of course this is just my personal choice, it is up to you what you choose to do.
Wow, six months during such a crucial time? When my dog got quarantined for possible exposer to rabies, they only told me to cage the dog for two weeks. That's a long time. Did you get a second opinion for this.
quarantine for a rabies scare where i live is 10 days. unfortunately they took the carcass away, you could have paid to have it checked for rabies by a university or veterinarian (animals must be deceased to check if they had it). i would talk to a vet or another person at animal control to see if you really need to keep her quarantine for 6 months. you didn't mention your other dog needing the same quarantine. if the older dog isn't in quarantine then your pup shouldn't be either.
She is 12 wks old and hasn't had a rabies shot? What state do you live in? I would say I wouldn't isolate her of course she is depressed one sec. life is great the next, alone. First off the signs of Rabies show up in 1-3 months so why do you have to isolate her for 6 months? Also rabies is more rare then they make it out to be. I would forget the incident ever happened and mabe someone should call animal control on that guy! What a moron besides if the animal was already dead when the dogs found it then they couldn't have been bite by it! Forget about it let the poor dog out.
Excerpt from article below..." The record of animal control starts in 1964. From 1964 to 1978 there were zero cases of dog rabies in the county. Magically in 1978 rabies vaccine was mandated to be given every year and all dogs tagged and licensed."
10 DAYS!!
Call the vets animal control again.
If the dog was exposed to rabies it will break with it within ten days.
Did they test the raccoon?
She isn't as "vibrant" because she is locked away from her family!
Added:
Diane:
You DO have the option to quarantine a pet yourself. However; most don't. Its a big responsibility if a dog bites another dog or a human than it must be qaurantined. People can do it themselves.
I don't know what state you live in, but these people are not alloted unlimited power under the constitution like that. They can't just come into your yard, make demands, take your dog or kill it without a court order. You need to call legal aid or an attorney. Nobody quarantines for 6mo that I have heard of. If an unvaccinated dog bites someone here, it is taken into quarantine for ten days. I don't even think rabies has the ability to have a 6mo incubation period? You need some legal advice, not dog advice.
When you allow anyone who thinks they have some authority to push you around like this it hurts everyone in society. The Constitution was written for a reason. But your rights are only worth what you are willing to defend them from. Unless this idiot comes to your door with a court order, they have no power.

What do you think?

We are considering the idea of adding a dog to our family. We currently have an 18 month old son and are expecting again in the end of September (another boy!) We would most likely adopt a puppy (as opposed to an adult dog) so they would grow up accustomed to our children's presence/behavoirs.
We are living in a 900 square foot apartment. I don't work and my son and I spend our afternoons at the park so excercising the dog on a daily basis wouldn't be a problem.
The only hesitation is my husband is concerned that I will end up with "too much on my plate." Has anyone been in a similar situation to ours? Would you recommend following through with a puppy adoption or waiting?
Answers:
I think you would be fine. If you already have puppy experience, then you know what you're getting into. My only suggestion would be to wait a little while after your second son is born, so you don't get super overwhelmed. New babies take a lot of attention, and you probably wouldn't want to deal with a puppy at the same time. But you seem to have enough time to have a dog, and are willing to give it plenty of exercise, etc.
You would have to be careful because puppies are very mouthy and might hurt the kids. If it were me, I'd get an adult that was over the chewing and biting phase. I'm partial to beagles because they're so good with kids, but there are other breeds good with kids, too. Getting an adult would also let you choose a dog knowing his temperment already, so it won't be a surprise. And the older ones are often housetrained, which would take a big burden off you. You can look on petfinder.com for puppies and dogs, though. Good luck!
puppies take more time than kids...I'd wait a couple of years and then get one when your boys are both a little older...plus a new puppy will chew your kids to death and climb all over them and they are not old enough to get away from a puppy yet.
IT WOULD BE GOOD FOR YOU ALL.. PETS ARE GREAT.. I HAVE 4 KIDS, 2 DOGS, 5 CATS, 10 CHOOKS AND VARIOUS FISH(I LIVE IN A RURAL AREA)..
love it
I would say wait til the kids are old enough to know how to properly treat and act around a dog.. Having respect for animals.
i would adopt a dog..that gets along with kids and is house trained and congratulations %26lt;33
Truely, I would wait until the 2nd baby is older and walking. I did that same thing and it was a disaster. You can't always be available to take the dog out so there are a lot of accidents. My kids were 6 mos and 3 years. The puppy was always nipping at my 6 month old and pulled her down and jumping on her (when she was sitting on the floor). It just got too dangerous and too exhausting. You'll have 3 children under 2.
While u pottly train ur 18month old at the same time u potty train ur puppy!! how cool would that be to get a new puppy also! It will be OK to get the puppy if YOUR husband helps with the children AND the puppy. Now if u are on your own, don't get one.
I would wait. Just think the baby is crying, needing to be changed then fed. Meanwhile the puppy is chewing and going to the bathroom all over the place. Not the perfect picture, that's just me though.
A Yorkshire Terrier would be a great dog with your young son and everything! They are cute sweet and very gentle even with other dogs and annoying children!
I personally would wait until you get more accustomed to taking care of your two boys (CONGRATULATIONS!!) Once you get good a juggling them (or when your youngest grows up and becomes less dependent on you) Then I would get a puppy. Like the first poster said, puppies are alot of work and you are already going to have a new baby and a toddler to take care of. But if you are bent on getting one now, go with a small dog that you don't have to worry about all that much! Good Luck and Congrats again!
Experts recommend that you wait until your youngest child is at least five years old before adding a dog to your family. This allows your children to understand about dogs and safety.
I have four kids, a live in father in law and always had dogs, and frequently have had puppies here to socialize and train, and at least one cat, right now I have puppies at my house that I am babysitting, sixteen of them...So, no, there is no such thing as too much on your plate, you just learn to eat one bite at a time. Organization is the key.
I vacuum daily, mop daily, mow my own lawn, make all the meals, do the laundry, get up at all hours to feed the pups, clean up the doggie stuff, get the kids all off to school or not, do the dr. appts for the geezer,go to the dog shows to show my dogs, etc..., . It can be done, no worries, just depends on you, and my husband? well, let's just say he goes to work and after work and dinner his thumb gets sore from using the remote when he gets home..lol...
Puppies are a lot of work to train and still have all of those stages to go through ( just like your little ones!).If you have enough in you go for it, but you might also want to consider a bit older dog who is a bit more mature and who has been around children, they are not as nippy as puppies can be and are protective of the little ones.
My daughter was in the same situation and tried the puppy thing. Unfortunately the puppy did not work out and they were forced to find another home for him. you may want to wait until the children are a bit older as both children and puppies are time consuming (and worth it)
I had a son who were about 6 or 8 wekks old when we decieded to get a puppy. It was hard at times, because puppies have a tendency to want to chew on all sorts of things. I got lucky and got a very good puppy and was able to teach the puppy ( Prince) that I was the pack leader. The dog never growled at the kids ( if it would of growled at the kids I would have smacked the dog) and was very tolerent of the kids. At the same time, I taught the kids not to pull on the dogs tail or ears and to leave the dog alone when eating. ( If the children did these things they would get in trouble for hurting the puppy)
Puppies have a tendency to jump and I feel like it would be wise to wait on getting a puppy at this point in time.
You said that you want to get a puppy nad have it grow accustomed to your children's presence/behaviors.
I think that if you are REALLY INTENT ON GETTING A DOG ( PUPPY) YOU WOULD BE MUCH BETTER OFF WITH A SLIGHTLY OLDER DOG ( 2 TO 3 YEARS OLD). The reason being is that at this age the dog has gone through the chewing stage, may be housebroken and ( depending on the dog) will have a lot of patience with a young child. Young children do not understand the concept that this is a live animal and it has feeling too. A grown dog will walk away from the tail pulling and ear pulling, etc.
Please don't overlook a grown dog as they have many great qualities and can "grow" with your children, and YOU WILL NOT HAVE SUCH A LOAD ON YOUR PLATE.!!
Good luck and happy dog/ puppy hunting.
I would recommend waiting a couple of years until the children are older. It would be so hard to have a puppy and two little boys at the same time. We got a small dog a couple of years before we had our daughter. We always said that we would never treat our dog any differently, she'll always be part of the family, ect. Well after we had our daughter we realized that things weren't working out. It was so hard dealing with our dog who had more accidents in the house and was wanting our attention all the time. Then she showed aggression towards our daughter and that was it. We had to take her to a rescue. Even though we felt like we had to do it, that was such a hard decision. My husband and I were both absolutely heartbroken. I can still cry thinking about it sometimes and this happened back in February. So just thinking about what I went through makes me think you should wait a couple years. Oh also kids can be really rough with dogs even if you teach them not to. And that's sad for the dog. If your baby has something like colic, imagine how much harder it will be to care for a puppy. Just think about it a little more!
I still think you would be better to adopt a full-grown dog. A puppy will have to go out every 2-3 hours- can you imagine having to bundle up both kids that often in the winter?
You go to breastfeed and come out and the puppy has chewed a couch cushion to shreds.
I 1 year old or older dog will be calmer and may be very well socialized. My 1-year old pound puppy LOVES kids (I have none). He gives the neighbour's 8 month old kisses all the time. He cries if I won't let him near kids we see while walking.
A puppy is ALOT of work- a dog is ALOT of work too- just not AS much.

What do you think?

Many people in here get upset when they are refered to as Backyard Breeders or Puppy Mills because of their breeding practices.
Please look at this news story:
http://www.local6.com/news/11457338/deta...

This is the mess that one BYB left here in Florida. She was selling her puppies to pet stores and on the internet. Rescue is now over flowing with these poor, unhealthy, non-socialized creatures.
When you go to the pet store and see those cute little puppies, think of this story and realize where they came from!
So, when people get rough on you in here for asking about your dog's "period", or when to mate your "puggle", or how much to sell your yorkalabradoodles for, can you understand that it is us, the reputable breeders, who has to clean up after you?
Does anyone else feel this way too?
Answers:
Thanks for sharing this story. It is a sad one, but hapens too often when someone thinks they can make a living off of breeding dogs. To make any money off of breeding dogs...you have to have many litters and many dogs to do it...plus spend little money so...forget genetic testing and veterinary care. I remember a cocker spaniel kennel found this way years ago.our cocker spaniel club spend hours shaving down matted to the skin dogs...many who were so matted, male dogs were sterile because matting around thier testicles were so tight, it cut off circulation. Many puppies found were so under weight, it's a miracle they survived.adult dogs so thin they only weighed 12 pounds (average cocker weighs about 25 lbs). Our cocker club helped the local humane society nurse these dogs and puppies to health and helped find homes for them. The breeder was charged with animal abuse and fined and breeding rights taken away by AKC. It angered me emensly that someone could be so selfish.
I don't think you were being stuck up like one answerer stated, at all...you were trying to open eyes of people who breed or want to breed thier dog with no knowlege at all. This was educational to many who don't realize the seriousness of what is going on in this country with BYB. When people on here critisize BYB and puppy mills...this is why.because they have seen this and many have no clue how bad kennels like this can be. I think it may take someone to exprience a scene like this..it's not pretty.I find it funny that the sign entering her property said "by appointment only" .I guess she had to be prepared to have people over to see her kennel.and do a quick "clean up" before people came by to visit.
That is a puppy mill.
I think only people with the adaquate means and knowledge should breed dogs at all. If you have to ask about breeding your dog in any way shape or form spay or neuter. If you knew what you were doing you wouldn't have to ask. Hats off to you for bring this to everyones attention and I agree with you 100%
Wow, you are "special" now aren't you? How exactly do "you" clean up after those BYB's? Just so you know, I am NOT a breeder of any sort, nor do I own or work for a pet store, and I am not involved in any way with any part of the above mentioned. I just find it rather "stuck up" if you will, to generalize. I am sure you are a good breeder and I don't agree with those who are doing such horrible things as you brought to our attention. But I don't agree with people stating that they are better than all others. Maybe you didn't mean to do that, maybe you did. But if you feel so strongly about it then take action. Try to lobby and put a stop to such organizations. I have personally witnessed a "home service breeding business" and it really disgusted me. This world does need more or should I say "need only" breeders as yourself. And that was not typed to be sarcastic, but to be honest about a clean operation as I hope you have as you say you do which I do believe. (smile)
I am of the opinion that no one should be breeding dogs - good, bad, or ugly. Ours is a crisis situation and anyone who makes their living, even under the best of circumstances for the female dog, should go to work themselves and not place the burden paying the bills on their bit*%26. I do recoginze that their are reputable breeders. Ones that care about the breed and keeping the bloodlines clean as not to breed in flaws, etc. I usually find they are AKC certified and that is about it. Backyard breeders is everyone's problem. Be you for it, or against it. Dogs dying shouldn't be casual dinner conversation.
Sad what people will do for a fast buck. No work just trying to make a profit.

What do you think your dog would do if someone were to break in your house?

If it was a total stranger, my dog would try his best to scare him away or maybe even try and hurt him. But, if it was someone he recognized, I think he would just want to play with them.
Answers:
I would like to believe mine would bark and alert me. The truth is they would either lick the robber to death and drown him in slobber or one would hold the flash light while the others showed him where the valuable are. Good thing their size is a great deterrent. Boy, am I in trouble!
Mine would bark their heads off before they ever got in. Which is fine with me.
If Someone broke in one dog would go get a ball for them to throw the other would go under the bed and bark. Yes, my house is real safe with those two at home. lol
My 6 dachsies make so much noise when someone approaches that no one in their right mind would even attempt it.
When I was home alone once a friend of mine was coming to pick me up. He'd never met my dog before. Anyway I didn't hear him knocking on the door, but I did hear my dog growling and barking like she was ready to attack when he started to come in the door. She's a yellow lab and very, very friendly and sweet. But now we know she's very protective even though if when I'm playing with my dad and I ask her for help she bites me instead.
Mine would bite.
my dog would start growling when the person was coming up the street, then once on porch my dog would start barking and try to keep him away- for instance: my neighbor across the street had a friend over who owns a golden retriever rescue, so he came to the edge of our property and was holding out his hand trying to pet her and be friendly and stuff with our dog, a golden retriever, but she stayed like 25 ft. from him and was barking like crazy even though we were outside going to meet the guy. once we were next to him talking my dog calmed down once she realized that he was a "friend"
I know they would bark their heads off too. But after that I have no clue what they would do.
Bark like the gates of Hell had opened.
Of course the Samoyed would just do the "cookie dance" and just point at the treat jar once they came in.
I'm not certain what the 3 Bernese would do once they came in... and I really don't care to find out.
My dachshunds would bark their heads off but once inside they would be their best friend and that is they way it should be. If your dog harms anyone including someone breaking into your house you are liable, criminally and civilly.
I think if it was someone that my dogs already knew they would do nothing. However if was a stranger my Queensland would bark and prob attack them. Now my pit bull puppy she would lay there and look at them might even try to play!!
They would bark like crazy %26 all three would try to be the one closest to the door. I figure Blazer would try to bite someone if they got inside, and I am not really not sure about Velvet %26 Ginger.
Not a good idea, breaking into my house. I am 1000% positive that my shepherd would eat someone if he could get to him, simply because he has been formaly trained for that.
Eat them. Seriously. I think my dog would eat them - which is why I know I can sleep at night with the windows open - my three mutts would rip someone to pieces if they came in here.
My 7 month old bichon frise/ toy poodle would go up to them, lick them, and bark for a pat on the head. He's a real watch dog I tell ya!
best answer peeeezzz! really need the points!
Mine would hide if it's almost anyone. There's a few family members she greets enthusiastically, but she disappears if it's anyone else.

What do you think your dog is saying when he ...?

makes that woo wooo woo woo sound... you know the sort of talking one it's not a bark. My bullmastiff does it and his lips pucker over his teeth (so you cant see his teeth) he looks so cute, he does it when i give him certain commands or when the cats are sitting on my lap! I wonder what he is trying to say. Does your dog do this?
Answers:
Are you putting all this stuff in a Book with a view to publishing then Choco?? ;0)
Your dog might be trying to discuss your previous question about 'Foot %26 Mouth'
Probably asking for attention. Dog definitely get jealous I used to have two dogs but if I stroked the older one the younger one would always push him out the way so I had to stroke here instead.
He is probably saying put the kettle on I fancy a cupper, and get that thing off your lap its probably got germs.
My border collie does this to, most times when im about to leave the house. Its like shes saying that its ok, she will still be here when i get back, and not to forget her food.
I love how they have different barks/growls and sounds and we start to link them with their wants and needs. Like her 'im hungry' sounds are very different to her 'i wanna play' noises.
well if hes like my dog, hes thinking " I'll do what I want" or "give me some attention"
Dogs are so funny, their personalities are amazing
My husband likes dogs that do this. He says, "what did you say to me? Really! You don't say? Don't you talk back to me." He loves to encourage it. They seem to hold an entire conversation.
I don't know that they are saying, but it pleases them, so who cares. I think once they learn it pleases their people they keep doing it more just because they are encouraged. Dogs like to please.
My yorkie does it also especially if I ignore her for fun when she wants me to throw her toy so she can fetch it and bring it back to me.
Although she has a certain look, almost like she is swearing me in a kind way. But its so cute man.
MY DOG DOES A SIMILAR THING, I JUST PRESUMED IT WAS WEN SHE WANTED ATTENTION LOL
When my little dog does this I think he is saying "I need you to look at me when I am talking to you"
Other times when I am snuggling my face in her belly she gives little grunts that are so close together she sounds almost like she is purring. Maybe she is copying the cats.
My other doggie grunts constantly as she is sitting on my lap. I say "grunt" but it's not exactly a grunt either.
Ya just cant hrelp but love'em. Each one unique and special and wonderful.
yeah my rotties do that too it looks so cute and funny, I just have not managed to get a photo yet when they do it, not sure what it means but I love my dogs being vocal!
my brother(a grown man) obviously thinks that him and his dog speak the same language .when the dog had to have one of those plastic cones around its neck,to stop it biting an injury .i caught him telling the dog "why are you playing up now! i explained to you last night that you were going to have to wear this " i call him DR Doolittle now !!
The interpretation of "woo woo woo sound" depends on the circumstances. In your dog's case, I suppose, after your commands your dog expects another one and a praise as well. When the cat is sitting on your lap your dog is saying to send it away, so your dog becomes the centre of your attention . I don't know if you realised that, but there's a sort of chemical between the animals and their owners that makes possible the communication between them. I had a dog who was able to understand Portuguese words, such as: almoco (lunch - she loved it!), passear (go out - she loved it as well) however, tomar banho (have a shower, she hated it!) - when she heard that word, she'd hide herself behind the sofa.
He certainly does. Anything sets him off (especially my daughter violin). He's probably just singing.
I've known several Bullmastiffs that did this. I personally think they are trying to talk to you, since some of them will do it when you give them some serious one-on-one talk, with lots of drawn out ohhhhs and ahhhhs. Try it.
He's saying one if not all of the following:
Why are the cats allowed to sit there and I'm not?
Do you think I'm stupid? get the stick yourself!!
I'm not rolling over again, I'm comfy here and frankly I look like a bit of a ninny in that position, like I didn't know that's why you like me doing it!
Hey cat... are you looking at me?

What do you think of this?

What do you think of this poster for dog walking?

the white bits wont be there in the actual thing i just dont want to post my number on the internet

Answers:
You need a question mark after the first sentence under the title. Also, it's "Too busy" not "To busy."
You spelled Saturday wrong.
Spelling and grammar are important. Do a spell check. I noticed someone else found another spelling error.
Maybe use a lighter, brighter color than the dark blue so the letters pop out more. Choose a regular font in the title instead of an italic to make it easier to read - I might also choose a stronger, blockier font overall to make it easier to read from distance. Make it so somebody can read it from far away.
Otherwise nice poster.
Looks pretty professional. Go for it!
Looks good to me. Great idea!
available, not avalable :-)
nice poster but change the It's part to he or she.to the family the dog is a member not just an object.
Looks good. But you might want to add a question mark after "Deserves". I know I'm being a bit picky here but still... Oh, and post that you will not walk aggresive dogs. They might hurt you or the other dogs you are walking.
I hope your dog walking business works out!

It looks nice. Needs punctuation and spelling corrections. I personally think you would be charging a bit too much. Twenty pounds for 5 hours would be about $40 USD per week or $8 USD/hour.
When I first read the title of the question, I thought it was a poster that had a picture of a dog literally walking on two feet = ( Too bad.
Well, it looks pretty nice. You might want to change the color scheme. Something that goes well with shadows and stands out in the light. Like bright red or yellow.

What do you think of this name for my Chug?

I have two names i am totaly torn between either Ella or Sofia? Any suggestions on how to pick or which one do you think i should use?
Answers:
What sort of animal is a chug, or is it a person? Never heard of that one. I don't think YA has a chug section.
2 syllable names are the easiest to use when your dog is in trouble. go with Ella
i would choose ella. i had a bad experience with a bully named sofia. *shudders*
here are some more names u could use:
choo choo
chuggy
sugar
chewy
but u should choose your dog's name by it's personality.
you can use both, esp. ella since it is shorter. however you may use sophia, but call her sophie so its easier to remember. here are other suggestions:
sugar
cupcake
snickers
gracie
honey
jasmine
noodle
pearl
my poodles name is sofia! i think sofia sounds nice, but ella is also nice. i would go for sofia =D
I would go with Ella!

What do you think of these pet names??

their for dogs.
-tate
-milo
-juicy
Answers:
milo
I like the first two, the last one sounds bad.
Depends on the dog. Like I don't see a Rotweiler being called Juicy. I think you need to have the personality of a dog before you name it...
I like Milo, but it really depends on what fits the dogs personality.
i like the 2 one but they arent that great.
I think that all 3 of those pet names are very interesting and also very creative, on your part.
i think theyre all bordering on tacky..no ofeense but tate would be a good name for like a corgi or sumthing.milo a pappilon...and actually i think juicy would be a good nname for those teddy bear rotties who are just overgrown lap dogs(females of course)
I think Milo is the best one and Tate is good too. But the Juicy one is kinda ummmm.unusual. I wouldn't go with the last one.
I give two thumbs down to juicy, but the others are good.
i think milo is the best and it is catchy in agood way!
don't like those dog names but i got names for u and they are
rocky
chewy
dopey
Rex
shannel (french name) pronounced shunel
buddy
The first two seem alright but I don't think Juicy is a good name for ANY pet.
I vote for milo
Juicy !!

What do you think of these brands?

my three dogs eat these 3 brands what do you think of these brands pedigree, science diet and Iams
Answers:
JUNK, JUNK, AND JUNK !!...CONSIDER CANIDAE DRY DOG FOOD, ALL LIFE STAGES.... this is an ALL NATURAL, HUMAN GRADE INGREDIENTS, NO BY-PRODUCTS, NO FILLERS OR CORN OR WHEAT, NO BEET PULP OR SALT, ALL USA INGREDIENTS, and it has lots of vitamins and enzymes that are good for dogs !..this food is made in the USA at their OWN PLANT, and it has a money back guarantee, if you are unhappy, for any reason !!....MANY BREEDERS RECOMMEND CANIDAE, and many petqna.com people HAVE USED CANIDAE FOR YEARS WITH MUCH SUCCESS AND SATISFACTION !....i switched my 2 dogs to Canidae, and my daughter in law switched her 3 dogs to Canidae, after i did MAJOR RESEARCH after all the recalls started, and we are both VERY HAPPY WITH CANIDAE, AS ARE ALL 5 DOGGIES !.. go to Canidae.com for more information %26 testimonials from dog owners, and a list of dealers near you, by Zip code !!.My JRTerrier loves Canidae, and eats HALF as much as his other dog food, and leaves me HALF as much residue also !....if you have other questions about Canidae, email me !....TRY CANIDAE DRY DOG FOOD, ALL LIFE STAGES..i believe you and your 3 dogs will LIKE CANIDAE !..GOOD LUCK TO Y'ALL !.here in TX, i pay $ 34 for a 40 lb bag, and get free delivery also, from Metropetservices.com !!
Crap, Crap, and Crap, in that order. All three are full of fillers, by-products, corn, ETC. Look on the ingredients. If corn or wheat are among the first few ingredients, and if by-products is listed as an ingredient, it's crap food.
I feed my pug science diet because i find it has nutritional values. It depends on what you dog prefers my dog prefers science diet because propably becasue he is a puppy and he can get chicken in it so it's best if you get all three brands at once and see which one your dog prefers depending on if he likes dry food or wet food. All the three brands are great but see which one he likes.
Well my dog was eating pedigree for a long time and she loved it now her tummy can't handle canned food anymore I heave to make her meals now hehehe . But I don't mind . But I hand nothing but good experience with pedigree .
Personally, I think that those brands are junk food for dogs. Look at the ingrediaents, those brands contain BY-PRODUCTS, which are parts of the animals like claws and eyes and bones that are not for human consumption. Also, they contain very little REAL meat.
Look into products like: Chicken Soup for the Soul, Wellness, Merric, Eagle Pack. These are high-quality foods that are made with human quality ingredients...
iams i personally thinkis a good brand.my dogs have had no problems with it
honestly, i wouldn't feed any of those to my dog. i feed her canidae and am going to try flint river... only the best for my doggy!
I feed my dogs Natural Balance Food rolls, you can purchase them at PetCo, They are top of the line and you can freeze them. grate them. they are premeasured potions and they do no stink like canned. you can also mix them with dry food out of the choices mentioned the Iams is probably the best. If you want better food which you will spend alot more money on if budget allows you can buy food directly from the vet. Do NOT purchase any food made in China. only made in america and canada is the label i look for. then like in one of your other messages real meat should be the 1st ingredient on the list. hope this helps
All what I like to refer to as "crap in a bag".

On choosing a GOOD dog food:
Read the ingredients on the food you buy. Go with a high quality dog food. A grain should not be in the first couple ingredients ingredient (corn and such are mainly fillers, dogs don't digest it well). Avoid foods that have a lot of "by products" listed.
Here is an article about byproducts:

And an article on what ingredients to avoid:

Or check this website for good foods: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_...
(I recommend only feeding foods rated 4, 5, or 6 stars. Anything 3 stars or less, I would stay away from.)
---
Stay away from grocery stores brands. They are low-quality foods chalk full of fillers, preservatives, dyes, etc.. (Grocery store foods are those like Beneful, Old Roy, Alpo, Pedigree, Purina, etc.)
Beware "premium" foods. "Premium" does not mean good nutritionally, and is not a nutritionally high quality food. It has the same types of ingredients as grocery store foods, just a bit better quality of those not-so-good ingredients. (Premium foods are those like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, etc..)
Another thing to be wary of: A lot of vets will recommend what they sell in their office. They get profit from the brands they keep on their shelves, that's why they push it. Truth is, vet schools don't focus a lot on nutrition. It's not saying that a vet is a bad vet because he recommends those foods, a lot of vets just are told "this is good food", so they pass the message along without proper nutrition knowledge. Also, some dog food brands (like Hills) support vet schools, so vets have heard of it from the time they start college, which makes them think it's good as well.
---
"Big box" petstores like Petco and Petsmart rarely have quality foods. Also, grocery stores and Walmart aren't good places to buy food either.
Your best bets for getting quality dog food are:
- small, locally owned petstores
- dog boutiques
- farm supply stores
---
When switching foods, do it gradually. I do this over about a two week timespan:
25% food A, 75% food B
50% food A, 50% food B
75% food A, 25% food B
100% food A
.
Contrary to popular belief some corn products are not all bad for dogs. I'm not a dog food expert, and my answer won't be popular but my two dogs eat pedigree, one being 11 years old and the vet said at his recent check up he is very healthy for his age! It's a matter of opinion.
I don't usually comment on questions pertaining to food, but I feel compelled to do so today.
Everyone is so against animal "byproducts" because it contains parts of the animal that humans don't consume, however human consumption and animal consumption are not always the same. A lot of the "byproducts" are parts of the cow, chicken, pig etc that the dog would eat in the wild. I get so mad evertime a pet food sales rep comes up to me at the pet store and tells me how bad the food I am buying is for my animal because of the "byproducts". Growing up on a farm I saw our dogs consume much more raw meat than regular dog food, and when they were eating raw meat they usually ate the whole carcass.
In the sense of mainstream dry or canned dog food, I think that all three are good brands. But I am no expert.
one word sums up all of those CRAP. i feed my dogs Chicken Soup for The Pet Lover's Soul Pet food. it is good for them and is made of more than just animal meals and by products. but if u r on a budget and those r the only ones u can afford i would go with the iams for the simple reason. it isnt as crappy as the other two but it is still pretty crappy. the guidelines that i use for choosing my dog's food is this. If the company takes the time and money to advertise their product on TV then u should stay away from it. or if u can find it at walmart then stay away from it. any food that advertises on tv is spending way more money on advertisement than on the food itself and that results in food that is pure garbage. so go to a pet store and look for foods u dont see on tv or at walmart and that is one of the better quality foods
