What dog breeds can stay alone while the owner is at work?

i love dogs and have owned lots of different species pets all my life. i have handled dogs, but never owned one. but i feel like everyone i would like to own a dog too...but like everyone i also have a job. i have a little yard and also have good running parks close by. i am willling to take my dog for a walk daily and groom weekly. i would prefer a quite, less -shedding and calm house/indoor dog. i would prefer a small breed. any suggestions!!

well, if you a small dog that doesn't shed a lot, why not a Chihuahua? They can be a little noisy, but they are very good when your at work. They like to curl up in balls (mostly on one of your shirts), and sleep a lot during the day. Very easy to groom and very affectionate. Just don't dress them up, or carry them in a 'doggy bag'. They don't really like that.
Matters more on the disposition of the dog than the breed actually.
You would do well to get an adult dog, perhaps a little older, from a breed rescue. A nice, calm dachshund would be fine and would be happy with a daily walk and attention when you get home.
They don't shed much or need grooming, just some brushing weekly - just make sure you don't get a bouncy puppy.
I can tell you one thing, definatley not a beagle, maybe a labradoodle (labrador/poodle) or just a toy poodle
Go to your local animal shelter and see the dogs there. You will be able to play with the animals and can judge their temperament. An adult dog would be best for someone who has to be away from home to work. A dog door is a great thing. Then the dog could go out for a while and then back in when he wanted to.
Good dogs to leave alone are King Charles Cavaliers as they are generally non-barkers and are very gentle dogs. They also don't require alot of exercise. I have a Cavapoo dog, she's part King Charles Cavalier and part Poodle and she is really sweet and doesn't shed at all. She's not dominant and hardly barks, unless she needs to use the bathroom, wants to come inside, or I'm just playing around with her and she gets excited.
Good luck!
To answer the topic of the question, after you find a breed of dog that you like, you must train the animal by using a schedule. Actually, this is not much different than raising a baby. What is most important is that you take the dog out in the morning a short walk so he/she can do their business. Then, bring the dog in and, at first, keep him/her someplace, like a kitchen, that would not have a carpeted floor. The dog should not be allowed to leave this area during the training while you are away.
When you get back home after work, take the dog out for a short walk so they can do their business again. Ideally, what you want the dog to do is to get used to is one poop and pee in the morning, and one poop and pee in the afternoon. Depending on the size of the dog and how much you feed it, remember, what goes in must come out, will determine how many poops it has in the afternoon - after the dog has been inside while you were away.
Also, most importantly, make sure the dog gets out to pee as the last thing it does at night and the first thing it gets to do in the morning. I've always found that if you live in an apartment, you have to adjust your habits as you want the dog to learn new ones. That is, you have to get up and get the dog on a leash, take him/her out to pee then bring the dog back in. Then feed the dog. Fresh water is to be given every morning.
Remember, yes, dogs are cute, lovable, and loyal, but they also demand a lot of responsibility. Be sure you can give the pet your attention, the time for love and for lots of walks, and the patience it takes to train the animal and yourself to be a pet owner. There are too many dogs and cats in shelters because well meaning people wouldn't or couldn't understand what is involved in having a pet, especially when they had to go to work or school or be away from their pet for hours at a time.
Good luck and please really think it out before you adopt a pet.
One more thing, get those little biodegradable plastic poop bags. Responsible dog owners ALWAYS pick up after their dog. I know I don't like stepping in dog poop and I'm sure you don't either.
:)
I have a pekingese and they are great dogs they don't require alot of space and left alone for awhile she doesn't get into anything they are sometimes called the apartment dog because they don't need as much room as some breeds do. they do shred and do require brushing. but are loveable as hell.
