What dogs do you suggest for appartments and for full time working people?

Based on your experiences...Is there any dog who could well adjust to a calm flat life and who doesn't need so much exercise,as well as,the owner constant presence?
Answers:
In my years of experience with animals I have found that dogs should only be inside pets if the owners are able to come by during the day to let them out. If you work full-time and want a pet for an apartment, a cat is your best bet. Get a kitten and train them to use the litter box (Easy to train. Cats like to be clean). Once a kitten is neutered/spayed and de-clawed if scratching is an issue (indoor cats only) you will have a loyal cuddly pet that is low maintenance and independent enough that you don't need to come home during the day. There are auto litter boxes that are very good and easy to keep clean. If you are interested in good auto litter boxes, post the question and I will give you the name of 2 that I have used and liked.
I agree 100% with the answer by 'shortstuff'.my experience with dogs has shown this to be true. Good luck. Pets are such fun!
pitbull
A smaller dog. Or adopt an older dog at your local animal shelter. This way he won't be a puppy who needs A LOT of care and attention. There are lots and lots of adult dogs just waiting for a home!
I dont think there is a dog like that.
Any dog would want his owner around.
I really suggest you dont get one.
But if u insist .. you buy a 1 year old yorkshire terrier
because you shouldnt buy as puppy because you dont have time.
i hope that helps
A little calm dog, don't judge by the breed. Pitbulls are too active for that, as well as boxers. Greyhounds are very calm. It depends on the individual dog.
Nope. Dogs are high maintenance. Forget it. Get a cat instead.
Really if you are working all day , to leave a dog in the apartment by itself , would be better not to have one . They need the care when you come home , and if your tired and dont feel like it your dog could get anxiety , just from not being out much , could create a problem .
How about an older rescued dog? An older dog won't need as much exercise and likes it calm. Rescuing the dog also gives you good Karma!
I opt for Pomeranians or Papillions. Both are small, energetic dogs that don't need a lot of room to run, and can entertain themselves when alone. They ARE very vocal, but you can train them not to be. Actually, they sort of take on the personalities of their owners. If you are calm, so will they be.
you don't want a dog thats high energy, like a jack russell, they will destroy things when youre not around. I would look at getting a small-midsize dog, like a dachsund, or a basset hound, or beagle or something like that.
Pugs are little dogs with low energy levels. While some may argue the pug is not the most attractive dog, he is affectionate and playful. The pug does not require alot of excersise but does not get along well with stangers. Sometimes pugs can be a bit headstrong but the dog is pleasent willing and loves to show off.
You will want a smaller breed, but be sure not to get one that is "active"...Terriers. Maybe a shitzu, but in all honesty if you don't forsee having an extended amount of time with the animal daily, maybe try a ferret. Dogs need daily maintanence.
Truthfully, I wouldn't own a dog if I worked full time. It's not fair for the dog to be cooped in all day. They need to be walked often so they can do their business %26 get plenty of sunshine %26 exercise. They get very lonely %26 start barking, which would really tick off the neighbors.
i have a chihuahua at home. im a full-time agent plus i workout at the gym everyday. he needs very little attention. just as long as you give him food and water, then you're all set. a 20minute play time with my chihuahua makes his day. i love Pugs too... you'll just have to give them chewbones and some other munchies so they wont pick on your favorite footwear or wooden furnitures. ;) hope this helps.
You can't expect a puppy to stay home all day without having a bathroom break..thats unrealistic. How are you going to house train a dog by being gone all day. My suggestion is hire a dog walker to come in daily to walk the dog in the afternoon to help train it or just get a cat.
Get a Chihuahua. My little Bella rules our apartment and feels as though she has plenty of room to run and play! Plus, they are excellent lap dogs and have such cute and funny personalities!
Small dogs are the perfect size for apartments. However, toy breed (yorkies and chihuahuas) are very emotional. They don't like to be left alone for long periods of time and are known to be hard to potty train. My Yorkie got very frustrated with my absence and tore up the carpet and chipped the paint off the doors even though I left him with a dog sitter. Carpet is very expensive in an apartment to replace if he pees or chews on it too. I would say that older dogs that are already potty trained wou;d be calmer in your situation.
If you study this breed you will find them to be the best aparment dogs of all time. They also don't mind being left alone all day and very rarely bark. You must exercise the dog when you come home though. They are also in the top five guard dogs in my opinion.
the Japanese Akita Dog
Good for you for asking this question to make sure you can care for the dog properly. I agree with the poster who suggested adopting an older dog. They are already calmer and you will find an older dog adopted from a shelter will be the the most grateful and loyal friend you could ever have. As well as saving a life since older dogs are harder to adopt.
There is also doggie day care. Around here it is generally $12/day and so maybe that can help a couple days a week or even just a day. Depends on the dog tho. Sometimes being in a strange place even if they can get out will be more stressful on them than being left home alone.
Good luck finding the right dog!
I would suggest a cat--------------It is no life for a dog.
For apartments etc. Yorkshire Terriers are one of the most accommodating breeds. They are very intelligent, quick to learn and have loads of energy which they dont require long periods of walks.
They can be left alone at home, providing your home is dog proofed. I have a yorkie, and she is home alone during the day while Im at work. I ensure that she has enough water and food and toys to keep her entertained. The best part of my day is going home to a very welcoming and happy yorkie. Yorkies are very vibrant dogs, and they amuse themselves, they like to play even with themselves and never seem to tire. Although, they are very difficult to house train, but all pups are. They do come round eventually and believe me you, once you own a yorkie, you will always want one.
get a book call The right dog for you. by Daniel f tortora, pH.d. it will tell you about the breed. chapter 8 selecting a dog has question for you to answer to help you find the right one for you
I lived in an apartment with 2 rottweilers and it was no problem, we did however go to the park twice a day. During the day when I was at work they, just hung out at home watching Animal Planet, (yes, they have their own T.V.)
you don't necessarily need a small dog...just an older one who has already experienced the fast-paced life and is ready to settle down. i recommend going to a shelter.
I think it might be easy to find a small breed dog that would be acceptable to an apartment. But I don't think you're going to find one that doesn't need a lot of attention or exercise. If you don't have time to have a pet then you shouldn't get one, or get a cat or or goldfish that don't need so much interaction.
I would try an older dog...maybe not such a young puppy...that needs alot of attention. I have had pups to cry, but I never lived anywhere close enough to people for it to bother anyone.
I adopted a black toy poodle, she was almost a year old. I have never had problems with her whining when I was gone. We have a puppy cage that we put in the kitchen (where the lanolium is) and set a puppy pad in there for her in case of an accident, but there usually is none. We got her a nice, soft dog bed that fits around her nicely and with higher sides to make her feel warm and protected. We put an old shirt that my husband just wore in there, a chew toy, and food and water. We take her outside right before we leave to go potty, then put her in the cage. When we come back first thing she goes right outside to use the restroom. She is content and I feel better cause I know she can't get into anything while I'm gone. Oh, I think I got the puppy cage at Petsmart.
