What can I use in my carpet shampooer to get rid of dog urine smell?

DP is correct - soak the area with white vinegar. Don't use the vinegar in the shampooer, that isn't going to work. Soak the area with white vinegar, dab dry, place a towel over hte area and let dry.
Vinegar is an acid (acetic acid) which is a weak acid that will destroy the proteins in the urine. This will get rid of the smell and since the proteins are denatured, it will make it also less likely that your dog will go back and pee there.
Also, white vinegar will not damage the carpet in any way, it will not set the urine, set stains, and so on - so if in the future you need to hire professionals to clean the carpet, you will not have done any damage that they cannot undo. Some cleaners will make the carpet cleaners job more difficult. I have not like Nature's Miracle (sold at Petco and Petsmart). I think it smells sickly sweet and for the price, you can buy soooo much more vinegar, and the smell dissipates in less than a day.

Enzymatic cleaner from PetSmart, or white vinegar diluted with water.
These are the only things that will take the smell out so the dog cannot smell it(Enzymatic cleaner will NOT mask the smell). Do not buy one of those fancy shmancy cleaners...

even if you clean the carpet, the floor below has been stained with urine and all animals can smell it %26 re-doil it.
you must replace that part of the floor, replace the carpet, and get rid of the dog.

i would try essentials oils or perfume, a whole bottle of lavendar or vanilla would probably do the trick.

Saturate your carpet with Simple Solution (found at any pet store) and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then suck it up with the carpet shampooer and then clean it with the Simple Solution Carpet shampoo made for steam cleaners. I seem to have good success with it for the dog urine.the cat urine, that's another story!! Good luck!

Carpet shampooers are the best way to get rid of dog urine smells. After the dog pees, I soak it up with a paper towel, then put OxiClean mixed with water or Nature's Miracle on the spot. Soak it. Then I put shampoo for pet odors in the machine and use it on the spot.
If you're wanting to shampoo the whole carpet, use the shampoo for pet odors, and then mix some OxiClean in water and add it to the shampoo in the machine. Make sure to mix the OxiClean in water before you add it to the shampoo in the machine, because you want to make sure all the crystals dissolve or else it won't work as well and might clog your machine. look for an enzyme cleaner for pet stains . There may be a few where the carpet cleaners are in the supermarket OR by the rug-doctor type rental machines.
If you find a pet spot cleaner use it FIRST , then clean the area around it with a normal carpet shampoo. (spray can , then vacuum.

The only thing I have found that works on cat and dog urine is "Natures Wonder" its in a white bottle with red writting. All you have to do is soak the area and let dry. It will reactivate the smell though, But thats why it works. It will also work on the stain. Im in my 30's and had pets my whole life. It will work.
