I think if you have a very old/laid back cat, the chihuahua might be really irritating. I have a 4 year old cat, and we recently got a kitten. They squabble often, and drives me nuts. For a kitten, the two might get along, but it depends on the attitude of both animals. If you get a chihuahua puppy, I think it would be more difficult, considering dogs need to be taken out regularly.
I have a Chihuahua in an apartment and she does just fine. We leave her at home while we are at work. She doesn't bark more than a normal dog, only when she hears stuff she thinks unusual. I don't have a cat so I don't know how she would be with it but she is fine with other people, kids and other dogs, I don't see why she wouldn't be alright with a cat. It all depends on how you raise them.
Well, in my opinion, because i have one, owning a chihuahua is much like having a baby. they cannot fend for themselves, they need you to do everything for them. i don't think they would be good for apartment living, because they are very playful and love to run around, they are also very small (mine is about 4 lbs.) and have trouble on a lease, it seems the leash pulls her, instead of her pulling the leash, so without a backyard, it would be hard for it to get its exercise. my chihuahua is great with my cat, but they were brought into the house together, i dont know how a cat would feel about bringing this new puppy in the house, and they are very tiny, and can be hurt very easily. i would never leave a chihuahua alone at home while i am at work, Mia (my chihuahua) goes to her grandmother's house (my mom) everyday when i am at work. like i said they are much like having a baby.. they cannot jump on or off furniture, they do no go up and down stairs easily (mine about about a year old before she could comfortably go up and down), Mia also wont eat out of a dish(not sure if this is common in chihuahuas), she is hand fed, so with nobody there she wouldnt eat. Also remember, they are very small and so are their bladders, they must be let outside very often, or they will have "accidents" in the house. I am not trying to deter you, i love Mia as a child, but they require A LOT of attention. I'm just not sure if your situation is the right one for a chihuahua.
I have a small breed dog ( pom) he`s the same size as a chi and they are a lot of work, not to mention they are suckers for attention. Oh, and you have to watch your heels, the dog may be under you!! They are so fragile..
Take it from my personal experience. It does not work to have a cat in the house and THEN introduce a dog. Cats are territorial animals and will like view any dog as an intruder for life. Get whatever dog you want to get and after wards introduce the cat.
I can honestly answer this question and i can tell you that i also have a chihuahua , he is the most lvable and loyal dog i have ever had. he is great with kids and luvs to go for walks. he tries to protect (he thinks he does anyway) He ws super easy to potty train he does tricks he hardly ever barks only when i accidently step on him (he loves to be at my feet) I would be totally lost if i did not have him I would reccomend one to anyone who is wanting a good loyal pet.
Good for Apartments? Yeah Ive never had a prblem, they are loud though when they bark, make sure your neighbors dont mind.
Compatible with Cats?? Well mine are, when they are first introduced it will be a little wild but usually they get used to each other. If you get a pup then the cat will eventually come to love him,
Can they be left alone? No, well i dont think so. I learned the hard way. My leather couches were scratched up due to him running around and jumping off the couches, he would pee-poop everywhere. I finally got him a big kennel. He learned to hold it till I got home from work and he would get a walk. His kennel was his safe zone.

I have a chihuahua and it is just a pup well it was thy're cute and they won't hurt your cat umm they are hyper once you come home well at least mine is and you may find "suprises" when you get home but don't be mad if you have a room that you don't use just put a gate up in between the doorway so that it's very easy to clean up or put up puppy pads you should be able to buy puppy pads at walmart or your local Pet Store hope that helped
My neighbor used to have a Chihuahua and he was a good dog and she did leave him alone at work and he didn't mess anything up...I would think that they are compatible with cats considering that most cats are bigger than they usually are....
