We took a sample of my dogs poop and found worms, so we called the vet and went to get pills. Was that the right thing to do?

You may want to call the vet to ask if they're going to want another fecal sample in a few weeks -- some vets run another fecal analysis after treatment to ensure that the treatment worked. Also make sure to pick up all the poop in the backyard so your dog doesn't step in a pile, lick his paw, and re-infect himself (nothing guarantees that dogs won't get worms but this is a good preventative measure).

YES IT WAS, EVERY DOG NEEDS THEIR SHOTS AND WORMING. TAPE WORMS ARE FROM FLEAS, THEY LOOK LIKE A MAGET IN THERE POOP. AND MOSQUITOS CAUSE HEART WORMS AND THIS WILL KILL A DOG, MAKE SURE YOU DO HEART WORM PREVENITIVE. A PET IS A FAMILY MEMBER, THEY DESERVE TO BE TREATED LIKE ONE OF THE FAMILY!! GOOD LUCK
Yes, you did the right thing. Your dog had/has intestinal parasites. Alot of times caught early they really cause no damage and the dog can live with it for a very very long time. Give your pup the meds and it will go away. Just make sure to bring a second sample about a week after you finish the meds to make sure they are all gone. Make sure to also get your dog tested for heart worms and put him/her on meds for that as well. Heart worm can kill a dog. Intestinal parasites are more anoying than anything else. Do you know what kind they were? I could give you more info on them if I knew what kind they were. I used to work at a vets office so I know all about this stuff also being a pet owner. Good luck.

Yeah you did the right thing. Like others have said, leaving this condition untreated could kill the dog, and it's pretty gross when the worms get bigger and you can see them hanging out of the dog's bum, all wiggling and trying to crawl back in. Try wrapping the pills in some bacon or other food to make it easier to get the dog to take them.

Worms (i'm assuming tape worms) can and will kill your dog. They eat anything that the dog eats, which means no food or nutrition for your pet. Once they start vomiting up worms, you know your dog doesn't have much longer. The only bad thing about your dog having worms is that any other pet that you have can get them as well, as they come from the ground and the eggs can last for years. You can go to a Walmart or any store with pet supplies and buy a pill that they can take to get rid of them, if it's not too bad already. good luck.

Absolutely! Your dog will feel so much better with the medicine! Make sure you use the "follow up" dose and not just give her the first dose. The vet should have given you one dose for today and then a second dose. Make sure you use all the medicine up! Your dog will be healthy and happy, and so will you!
Yes, it was the right thing to do. Heartworms (not found in stool) can cause blockages in the heart valves and prevents the heart from pumping blood throughout the body resulting in death. Hookworm and whipworms create blood in the stool and if blood can get into the stool the bacteria from the stool can get into the bloodstream causing toxicity. Roundworms breed in the lower intestines and live in the upper intestines and prevent the dogs body from properly digesting food and can cause anemia and malnutrition which in serious cases can lead to death. Tapeworms connect to the digestive linning and prevent the dogs body from gaining access to nutrients in the food. If the dog does not get proper nutrients it will die. You can see there are many problems with a variety of worms and treating the dog and putting it on preventatives is the best thing to do.

Yes you did the right thing. If a dog goes untreated it will eventually get really sick and even die. More likely your dog has tape worms, which latch themselves to the dogs intestines, and when they come unhooked the come out in the poop. The worms can cause the dog to vomit, have diarrhea, and make them dehydrated. So yes you did the right thing.
Some worms cannot be seen in the fecal matter. A Vet needs to do a fecal exam (to check also for worms that cannot be seen without the use of a microscope) and a blood exam (for heartworms). Some worms you can see and describe, a Vet can know it is, for example, tapeworms. Then they give you pills for that. Most Vets will worm for many types of worms and give pills for tapeworms when there are fleas or evidence of tapes is seen in stool.
Heartguard, a monthly heartworm prevention also keeps some types of common worms in check. But your Vet has to do the blood test to be sure your dog is not heartworm positive because if it is, then it needs to be treated for the heartworms and that treatment is very hard on a dog, but very very necessary. Untreated heartworms or improperly treated heartworm condition can kill a dog. The adult worms literally go to the heart via the bloodstream and bore holes in it, clogging it up.
