My mother has one and he is not quiet at all. The dog barks constantly when we're there for no apparent reason at all! It took her a year to potty train him and he will still occasionally have an "accident" (he's 2 1/2). He is fine with my kids, a little rough playing, but my sister's kids who are younger can't even attempt to pet him without him growling and snapping. He really is one of the most annoying and time consuming dogs I have ever witnessed and I can't for the life of me figure out why she thinks he is so perfect. To each their own I guess.
you have to wash there eyes alot
tear stains...
They are nice, great for kids, taking it everywhere dog, and sometimes pee all over the place.
The Maltese is spirited, lively and playful. Gentle, loving, trusting and devoted to its master. Highly intelligent. Good at learning tricks if he feels sufficiently rewarded. Bold and quick to sound the alarm in case of suspicious noises. It is a classical companion dog; graceful and lovable. They do well with other animals. Maltese love to play outdoors but have a penchant for jumping in puddles. A bath must follow! These dogs can be snappish with inconsiderate children and may be difficult to housebreak. Sometimes they are picky eaters. Include small biscuits and dry dog food in this breed's regular diet to help the teeth stay strong and healthy. Do not over-pamper or overprotect these little dogs, for some become unstable, and some may become jealous of visitors.
They live about 15 or more years. It may live as long as 18, but it is important to keep it out of the damp.
They can be lovely dogs - despite their small size, they still need real exercise and mental stimulation. Don't expect a Maltese to be happy just sitting around the house all day - I helped to raise one from puppyhood and she is still a real go-getter! A puppy class is a must, they can easily develop behavioral disorders (like hysterical barking - not cute at all) if they are not exercised physically and mentally.
Translation of AKC description:
"spirited" = barks a lot
"lively" = barks a lot
"playful" = barks a lot
"devoted to his owner" = alarm barker
"Bold and quick to sound the alarm" = uh, yeah.
Please get the maltese from a reputable breeder and not a pet store. There is a maltese in my dog obedience class that is really well bred. She came from an awesome breeder and not only is she gorgeous, but she is really smart, too.
