Answers:
Could be a number of things from spider bites to chiggars. You should take him in. A good vet should be able to tell what it is by looking at him.
I would take the dog to the vet. He might be having an allergic reaction to something in its food or maybe just have sensitive skin. My dog had a rash and it just ended up being dry skin. The vet prescribed a pain killer and a antihistamine and she is doing fine now.
why would you give your dog benadryl?
A lot of dogs get gnat bites and seem to be allergic to them. They itch like mad and are full of tiny little very red bites. If that sounds like what your dog has, he is getting them while he is outside. The more they lick and make the area raw, the more attractive it is to the gnats. I think there are things (sprays or cremes) you can buy at the pet store to repel gnats. I would get him some of that and see if the problem clears up. Make sure you get something formulated for dogs!
sounds like ring worm without even finishing your question. But just to be safe I tried to search for insect bites on dogs but really didn't come up with anything.
The link shows pic you may want to call up a few more sites to see if this is what your dog has.
If not, try to get him to the vet as soon as you can, the itching is definately a problem for him but it may be more serious.
good luck
have you canged foods? this could be some type of food allergy as well from where you are sescribing his itching. if it were a spider bite it would be painful, not itchy. It is something he is allergic in the environment, or his food, but he still needs to be looked at by a vet, they may recomend a hypoallergenic food such as z/d from science diet, or another type. if it is envirnmental, they may prescribe a short run of prednisone to help the inflammation but you may want to keep him out of that environment and bathe him in an oatmeal type shampoo to help this irritated skin, the vet may also recommend a medicated shampoo
I would have him seen by you vet. Benadryl generally doesn't nothing for itching in dogs as their histamine is not readily disengaged by the use of oral anti-histamines as in humans.
Spider bites, however are usually very painful as one kind of bite produces necrosis (death) of tissue and looks like a little target and other is a neuro toxin that makes them very sick. Usually the damage from a spider bite isn't noticeable for a couple days - when the pet becomes more painful and tissue necrosis is apparent.
He may have been stung by a member of the hymenoptra family (bee, wasp, etc). If so, he should be seen and given IV meds and possibly supportive care. Some allergic reactions are bad enough to warrant hyposensitization therapy to their venom.
