What do I do?

My dog was running down the stairs and had appt. hurt himself while coming down. I didn't see how but when he got off the stairs he started to limp and he yelped loudly. I put him in his kennel to rest but it has gotten a little better but I can tell he is still in pain. What do I do? I plan on taking him to the vet soon but was wondering if there is anything I can do to help him now?
Answers:
Well put him to rest in his kennel or play area. 2nd get him to the vet soon because he must of just pulled his knee cap out and the vet can easily put that in. Pretty much you have to make him a couch potatoe. No activities, less eating and just make him relax as much as possible. The vet should give you pain killers which will more than likely make the pain go away!
Good Luck!
if he is still whining he is in pain if he can move or walk on it, it will be fine.save your money and give it a day to feel better-if there are no bones hanging out and not sore...your in the clear
Ummmm, if your dog was yelping in pain you should take him to the Vet asap. Why wait and let him suffer?
For now all you want to do is keep him off of it and if you have one put a heating pad on it. You can also try wrapping it. I would say see if gets any better in the next couple of days and if not then take him to the vet. Try to save a couple of hundred dollars.
I know that money can be tight and I don't want to berate you for not taking him to the vet. However, keep in mind that if it is broken (like my dog's was), the sooner you take him to the vet the better it will heal. This is especially true the older he is.
My dogs occasionally get limps and pains and generally they go away in a few hours or a day. Since he's still whining, I would be concerned. Is he generally a baby about these things?
Are your stairs carpeted? If so (or even if not), he may have gotten a toenail caught.
Check his toenails. See if there's a cut or tear anywhere on his legs or feet. Gently flex and stretch his limbs (his elbow, wrist and toes). Feel the bones and the muscles. Pay special attention to see if any area seems to give him pain.
can he still walk ok? or does he yelp in pain when he tries to take a step? if so take him to the vet, if he can walk on it ok give him a couple of days to rest and 2 baby asprins every 6 or so hours. this is what my vet told me to do when my dog hurt his leg trying to get in my truck.
I would bring him to the Vet ASAP...don't let anyone pick him up or let him run around, because that might injure him more. Just take him to a close Vet and get him checked out.
For immediate help you can ice it like you would for your own injury. If he's still showing pain after a few hours, it usually requires a vet visit. Unless the dog is in obvious extreme pain, you can wait until normal vet hours. If it appears broken, you should contact your vet immediately.
Give your dog an aspirin and wait a while to see what happens. He may have slipped and sprained something. The aspirin should help the pain and it may heal fine on its own.
he probably sprained or broke some thing
maybe he sprained a muscle in his leg?
well dont put anything on his leg like a splint cuzz that can mess up his leg and make it worse.
i suggest keepin him in the kennel but spend time wit him. other that there really isnt much to do till u take him to the vet.
Sounds like a dislocation of the shoulder. The vet can take care of it for you fairly easily, but you can't more than likely. It won't get much better, and may get lots worse. Time for a vet.
He probably popped his hip out. A baby aspirin or less would help the pain and he should see a vet to pop it back in. You didn't say what size he is? Usually vets give a baby aspirin for about a 30lb dog. So a smaller dog gets less a bigger dog could have 2 baby aspirins. You can call your vet for an exact dosage. Use baby aspirin not tylenol. It fries the liver.
