What causes dogs to be born dead?

My dog started having puppies at 4:00 am this morning and she had 9 healthy ones then three more were born by 10:00 am and all of them were born dead. It is now 7:40 pm and she just had another dead one. Does anyone know what could have caused this and how I would know if she is going to have any more?
Answers:
Obviously she was mated several times. Each time she mated, she probably conceived more pups. So, if there was over four days during which she was mated, then there would have been pups technically "younger" than others when they were born. These are probably the ones that didn't make it, because they were not fully developed.
However, since there were so many, and such a length of time between when they were born, I would definitely get the vet involved. There may be more going on than you can see. If there is a puppy stuck in the birth canal, you can loose the mother!
Plese call the vet asap! Your dog could die if she has a dead puppy stuck inside her.
Lots of thing can cause still born pups. They were premature due to over mating.
They were in the birth canel too long.
They were starved of nutrition from all the other pups.
You need to call your vet and get her in to be seen by tomorrow. she needs to be checked to make sure there are no more pups and the pups need to be checked to.
13 puppies is a hugh litter. I'd think permature pups. How many time did you let her mate??
sorry there are so many still borns. its normal for dogs to have 1 or 2 still born puppies but that many is weaird please call your vet right away just to be safe. it could be that they were in there to long. or there are just so many in the litter that not all were healthy. also ic ould really depend on the age of the mother.good luck with your puppies.
call your vet NOW!
Sometimes that has to do with how young the mom is. Sometimes the mom is not fully developed to carry such a large litter. Sometime there is not enough room in the womb to care for all the pups. Sometimes the canal is too small and the pups to big so they die.
CALL THE VET!!!
Just like with people, there are a million reasons to have stillborns. Take her and the puppies to a vet within 48 hours of birth - both to make sure she's delivered all her puppies and to make sure she and all the pups are well.
I agree with Goldengal. It seems like overmating. A dog can become pregnant each time she mates. She must have bred several times to ahve 13 pups. Now they don;t usually just conceive one at a time, but I rarely hear of such a big litter. The ones that died may well have been that last conceived so they may have been 5 days or so younger than the others.
The foster dog I had a short while ago had to be c-sectioned at 55 days because she was bred with a much larger male. Only one pup survived. Had they not have been taken when they were mom and her son would have died too. The pups died because they were immature.
You really do need to get the mother and pups checked in the morning at latest. I myself would get her checked tonight with so many dead pups. If one is retained and she does not see a vet you may lose her too. Then you will have a huge problem.
That's in part why it's advisable to have an ultrasound or an xray towards the end of the pregnancy so as you know how many pups to expect. I sure hope she does not have anymore. Poor thing must be exhausted.
Praying for mom and pups.
I would definitely have her checke by a vet to make sure there are no more pups inside. Despite what some others say, the size of a litter is not determined by how many times the female was bred. It has to do with how many eggs there are and how fertile the male and female both are. I would think the size of the litter had more to do with the pups dying.. There was not enough nutrition for so many pups. Some were just too weak. The female may just have got too tired to be able to push the remaining pups out. She was in labor for a lot of hours. She just gave out and had no energy left to have the remaining ones. That is why it is so important to have her checked. The remaining pups are ,most likely dead, but you can lose the female too if there are more pups inside. Please get her to the vet ASAP!! I pray everyone will be okay.
It sounds like the last few puppies were possibly logged in the birth canal or were in the birth canal too long. I would take her to the vet to have him check her out and make sure she doesn't have any more puppies inside her. He can also give a shot to make her uterus contract to remove any after birth. This is always a good time for the vet to examine the puppies as well.
