What do you do when your dogs howl at night?

I'm exasperated... I've tried everything i could think of to make them stop howling at night, from scolding them, treating them, or letting them sleep in the room with me, but nothing works. any suggestions?
Answers:
Do they get enough exercise during the day? A good walk and play time can help a dog sleep better at night.
Maybe try one of those electronic devices that doesnt hurt them but gives them a little shock when they bark... Its a collar. I have been having the same situation i have a new puppy and he cries alll night long! Annoying
Rather than scold the dog, try to wait until he is calm and then as soon as he's quiet, you give him a treat and say, "Good boy."
If he starts to howl again, wait until he's quiet and treat him again. Reward him only for good behavior, but do not scold when he's behaving badly. Scolding him will only make his behavior worse, as dogs tend to see any attention as good attention.
aghh if its dogs in the neighbourhood then not much may be done.
it sounds like they are being beaten up by someone (these ones anyway) maybe horrific dreams of reality?
I try to snuggle in a ball and think of something until I cant think anymore and then give in to sleep.
has anything traumatic happened to your dogs? It may be that they're missing their parents or they could be part wolf :/
I used to have a dog who would bark/howl all the time. you can buy a citrenella collar at any pet store, online. Basically it is a collar with a little box on it that lines up with your dogs neck. It has a censor on it so when your dog begins barking or howling, it will automatically go off and spray the citrenella spray in his face - it is not cruel or doesn't hurt the dog. It basically just interrupts them and they stop. Most dogs only get sprayed about 2-3 times and then they get the picture. Do this before you even think about a shock collar - those do hurt after a few times and some dogs will think you are hurting them because you are putting the collar on.Try it - I guarentee it will help.
Electric bark collars. Put them on at night and make sure they are on high and tight. Do not listen to those that have no idea how these things work. They will stop the barking/howling, guarantee.
