What do dogs smell for when they are smelling to use the bathroom?

just wondering what it is dogs are smelling for when walking around outside before using the bathroom. thanks! =)
Answers:
smelling to see if any other dog has left their scent there before 0r urine or poo. the dogs scent is a very important method for communication originating from when they where in the wild and had large territories, the inflrmation in their scent is about their health, age, status in the family and reproductive ability
They look for the best spot to mark their territory.
They want to know if they have been there before, and if another dog have been in the spot too (territorial behaviour). They also make sure that the area is safe and there are no insects, spiders or other little harmful animals.
dogs are sniffing other dogs marks. these marks tell a dog what dog was there before them and the dogs gender and much more.
to see if another dog already marked his territory there, if he did, then the dog will find an unmarked spot to call his own.
