What can I expect from my dogs when they get home from the hospital after a spay/neuter?

Both my dogs are going into surgery tomorrow for their spay and neutering. I was wondering what I should expect from them and how to make them as comfortable as possible. Thanks!

If you are one of those ppl like us who check on your dog, at the vet or at the groomers, and ask if your dog is ready for pickup yet...
If the vets say to pick up your dogs at 4pm or whatever, pick them up then, not earlier, no matter what they say, we picked our dog up at 1 and they said to pick her up at 4, but they said that we could pick her up early..IT DID NOT GO WELL WE THOUGHT SHE WAS GONNA DIE! lol
The vets said that if we left her at the vet until 4 she wouldnt have thrown up at home, and act all lathargy.
When you pick up your dogs at the vet at the right time, dont let them walk to the car, unless they are to big to hold.
Our dog if veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy close to us so she whined and whined when she saw us and was totally freaked out. She now officially hates the vet, she can smell it in the car when we get close and she starts to whine!
Make sure your dogs have a kennel, if you dont i suggest keeping them very calm, dont feed them, only feed them water for the first hour or so. Keep them inside, if they need to go potty, take them out side and keep an eye on them, they do not need to eat grass. or lay in the grass, it can make the insicion irritated, and can get infected. dont let them run, or they can stretch the insicion to much and it can start to hurt them. Our dog threw up his pain meds, so we didnt give her anymore, and she seemed to be fine, she was running around 2 days later and being just like herself, she ran a bit to much, but her insicion healed very nicely.
After and hour or so and they havent thrown up yet, give them some pan fried or baked chicken, (white) so its not to hard on their stomaches. After one day of chicken, give them their dog food. anymore questions or concers call your vet, do not be afraid to ask to much, we called like every 15 mins lol we had her to early so she did alot of stuff we didnt know would happen, they didnt even tell us what to do!!
oh also, dont let them like the insicion to much or else it will result in biting, if that happens take them to the vet and they will most likley have to get a cone collar!!
Just keep them quiet, and make sure they have a comfortable place that they can be by themselves if they want to.. Food and water available.. They'll feel a little crappy the first day, with the anesthesia coming out of their system.. They don't take long to get back to normal.
Well my dog was sleepy and she cried a little bit too , she was sleeping and threw up few times , but other then that she was OK but she was like that for a couple of days .
The first day they will probably lay around a lot. They recoup fast. Watch them that they do not chew / lick the stitches. Watch for increased redness or oozing that may indicate infection. If you have ANY concerns or questions call your vet. Believe me, you paid for the answers! Kudo's to you for doing a great thing for your pets!
they will be very lethargic, and will probably just want to be left alone, and to sleep. some vets will give you pain meds and others won't, it depends on how long they keep your dog at the clinic. One thing you need to do is to watch them and make sure they don't take out their stitches!! Seriously, it itches them after a while, and so they will want to lick it and pick the stitces out, but don't let them!
They will be very woozy and sore. Be very gentle and supportive. Check the sticthes regularly.
Probably a lot of soreness... My dog didnt like to be touched, and she would barely get up for the first 24 hours. She didnt like to be alone though, so I kept her close, and fed her water through a syringe. lol.
Pretty much you'll have to put the bowls up to their face to get them to eat. But after a day or two everything should be normal again.
:D
It depends, just like humans every dog responds differently to being put under. Puppies usually have less problems then older dogs.
Our dog was just a little sleepy, and later didn't show any signs of discomfort.
Give them their meds, watch their incision, and make sure they don't lick or bite it too much.
I'm sorry that I can't answer your question. I just wanted to say that tomorrow my baby bulldog is going to be neutered, and I am nervous for him as well. I feel your pain. Good luck and best wishes.
I took my dog back the second day. She was normal as usual except, she has to wear a corn collar for the first few days.
the vet should get you instructions to get care of your pet
it depends if he or she has complacations
make sure he does run, jump or be cause that will rip the sutures
Mine felt a little rough the first day and then there was no keeping her down. She ran and played some and I was thinking she might hurt herself, but she always seemed to realize when she had done enough and slowed down on her own. I gave her a baby aspirin in some food twice a day for pain and she seemed to do just fine. Best wishes.
She cried all night %26 wouldnt go to the toilet, would never do that to another dog again now she has to wear a muzzle when she goes to the vet she was fine before.
