What can i do to get my dog to start eating dog food again?

Help!! i'm really desperate! I tried three brands already. My chihuahua won't even eat cesar. it was his favorite. i think it all started when i went away for vacation for one week and the maid started giving him people food despite instructions never to give him food from the table. They always cater to him when i'm at work. and now he's become a picky eater. What should i do? i really want him to stick to dog food. will he die from starvation if i don't give in and give him people food?
Answers:
Try putting little bits of chicken or cheese mixed in with his dog food so that he sees it and starts eating it. After he gets used to his kibble, start putting less and less in so he eventually is content with just eating kibble. If you leave the kibble available to him, he will not starve himself, he will eat if he gets too hungry. I give my dog Pedigree with meat stuff inside the kibble and she loves it. Good luck!
I would consider to feed the dog food to your dog in your hand. Same thing happened to my dog, which is a Labrador Retriever, and i would feed the dry food to him in my hand, and the wet food in a spoon. YOU SHOULD TRY IT! And he obviously won't die out of starvation. I have noticed that in dogs, they will eat anything when starving.
Try making feeding time fun. What I do with my dog is I play fetch with him with the food. It only takes around three pieces. Pick up one piece show it to him and throw it up for him. Don't throw it far because they won't always go for it. My other dog will eat just out of spite for the other. If hes not eating my step dad will just call my dog and tell the other that my dog will eat his food if he doesn't eat(not true since my dogs near anorexic but funny nonetheless). Anyhow good luck and I hope you get your dog to start eating soon.
Don't worry about your dog dying of starvation!! if you really want him to just eat dog food again, don't feed him ANY people food at all, when he gets hungry enough he'll eat HIS food with no problems, it may take a week or so to get him use to just eating his food. If it really bothers you him not eating properly add little pieces of chicken into his food, the problem you will probably run into is him finding the pieces of chicken in the food and still not eating his food, i did run into the same problem with one of my older dogs and we did the first sugggestion, left his food down and either he ate that or he didn't eat, I promise though, he won't starve
Get him a high quality dog food like Innova, Wellness or another comparable holistic/natural brand. Don't give him cheap grocery or pet store crap. Only offer him dog food...no table food. You can mix dry food with canned to make it more enticing. He will eat when he gets hungry, he won't let himself starve...make sure you give strict orders to NEVER feed your dog table food...tell them it can kill him and he is under vet's orders to ONLY get dog food. But, he is going to eat if he is only offered dog food...just wait him out and be more persistant than he is being stubborn. Also, you can try hand feeding the dog food or even using it like it is a treat for listening to commands. But put it out and leave it as his only option.
Our puppy seems to be going the same way,so what Ive been doing is lightly cooking some finely chopped stewing steak for her and just offering small amounts at brekky and dinner. At lunch put down a small amount of dry food .If you give her brekky early enough in the morning she will probably eat some dry food.If the maid cant be trusted to look after your dog properly then maybe you might need to find someone else to look after him.No he wont die of starvation if you keep offering him doggy food.
When my girl wasn't particularly fond of her food, she would self-fast, sometimes for up to 3 days, on a regular basis. I would stop feeding him anything but his food, including all treats or extras. If a dog is healthy, the will not starve themselves, however, if you are dealing with an extremely tiny dog you do have to be a little more careful. I would wait it out a day or two and if he still refuses to eat, I would consider changing his good to something with a higher meat content and less by-products and corn-fillers? I feed grain-free foods now (Orijen and Nature's Variety frozen raw specifically) and my girl hasn't refused a meal yet.
Millions of dogs never get fed dog food and are in excellent health. I'm sure the butcher and markets would have a good supply of raw meaty bones for your dog - even toy breeds love crunching through bones. Try chicken necks or wings as a start.
I hope the link helps
