What can I give a dog with a sprain?

We were in the park today and the sprinklers came on. My dog got caught up in his leash. I think he sprained or twisted his leg.
I have two dogs, both are Scotties. The other one had something like this happen to him about two years ago. At that time we rushed him to the vet only to be told there was nothing to be done. It will take time to heal. Oh! Here's a bill for three hundred dollars. I don't need to go through that again.
At the time we were told he could be given something over the counter for any pain or swelling. And I don't remember what that was. Anyone have any ideas?
Answers:
childs dose of Asprin, a cotton wool, stretched bandage, put cottonwool around the leg, not to tight, wrap bandage around leg over cottonwool, not to tight, dont stretch the bandage as you wind it around, this will tighten the bandage as it moulds to the leg, just wind it gently, 3 times around should do, leave this on for 3 to 4 days, dont let it get wet and dont bandage the foot. Then rest him for 5 days to 1 week, no walks, no play, no jumping, confine him to a small area. He shoud be back to normal if you follow this.
Vet nurse.
Well it wasn't Acetaminophen, and it wasn't a NSAID... You should call your vet..
Give him a trip to the vet
A trip to the vet is the best gift, because it might NOT be a sprain, it could be a break, it could be a puncture wound, you don't know!
