What can I do for my puppy with allergies?

For the last few days my six month old small dog (shitzu x chihuahua with dominant characteristics of a tibetan terrier) has had runny eyes and occasional sneezing. I'm not a dog expert, but I think he may have allergies. He is going to the vet on Tuesday to get checked out. What can I do to keep him comfortable in the meantime?

chi x shih cross with tibetan terrier characteristics? oh boy what a horror show.. runny eyes is characteristic of the shih and chi... not allergies. many small dogs sneeze just because.
dont take him outside
Both my pekingese have skin allergies. The vet had me give them benadryl. I take one pill, break it in half, and give each one 1/2 pill. They are small dogs and don't need much. I can do this 3 x a day. The only way I can get them to take it is to hide it in tuna. They LOVE tuna. Some dogs get tired from benadry and some get hyper. Mine really don't have any change at all - except they quit itching.
You can actually give Benadryl to dogs! Dosage is 10 mg for dogs under 30lbs, 25mg for dogs 30-50lbs, and 50mg for dogs over 50lbs. However, Benadryl, while a fairly safe drug, DOES have potential adverse effects and is not for every pet. Benadryl is to be used with extreme caution in patients with glaucoma, prostatic disease, cardiovascular disease, and hyperthyroid, among other conditions. It may also interact with drugs that your pet is taking, so be sure to discuss use of ANY drugs for your pet with your vet first. (Sidenote: some human over-the-counter drugs are toxic or fatal to pets; always discuss with your vet before "self-medicating" for any condition. )
Definitely Benadryl. My dog was raised in San Antonio and his allergies were TERRIBLE down there. (not bad now that we're in Indiana) I gave him benadryl since that's what my vet said to do. It helped a lot and made him a little calmer/sleepier.
